You do know that Futaba and JR splines are different?
I think the feeling is that helis in general are prone to being crashed. Not that the Bergen is any more so.

D'oh! Will these companies ever see the light and try standardizing this stuff? Sheesh.
I got the idea from that back-and-forth you had with Chris a few pages back. I see now that Chris suggested I use the JR wheels as templates, not as actual substitutions on the Futaba servos. Thanks for the heads up! Meanwhile, the Futaba connectors I trimmed to fit into the snug holes in my JR tx (not just the fins; plastic had to come off of all sides) just don't look workmanlike, and I can't find a small enough file (out here in the boonies) to ream out the openings. Guess I could have found one on line, but I decided I'd try actually changing over to JR connectors on the Futaba servos, using a connector kit and crimper. Anyone tried/had any trouble/heard of anyproblems with that approach? I did it once before without the crimper, just pliers, and it's great, but that was just for a charger lead. I don't want to take chances with these servos, obviously. Stu |

I hadn't considered changing the plugs, good idea, as long as you get a good connection...
You may even consider while doing it, getting the exact length you need and do away will all the extra that gets tucked into the strong box. Leave a little slack, so they won't get pulled out accidentally...... Crashes are inevitable, in general. A few years ago I had a crash that really upset me. After thinking about it for awhile I realized that every helicopter I fly will eventually crash, and as long as I accept that up front, then I won't get PO'd when it does happen.

Difference between planks and helis.
Plank guy crashes, everyone runs over and say things like: "My what a bummer." "I feel your pain." Heli guy crashes, everyone runs over and says things like: "Wow, awesome crash." Can you do it again?" The latter gets the answer, "Sure, I can try."

OK, I've got the Z-RC on. Delicate procedure - it doesn't come out and say it, but I assume you're not supposed to crank down too tight on those teflon gaskets, right? Hey Chris, I saw the Monster Quest piece on youtube. I'd heard about it, but I didn't know it was you. Very cool! But you should have been flying FPV so you could cover some territory! |

Monster Quest was a fun shoot, nerve-racking with an expensive FLIR camera onboard, but fun nevertheless. Getting the Turbine out over the semi frozen river didn't even bother me. If it went in, at least we would have had it on video!
Couple pics of the aileron and elevator servo wheel setup on my gasser. Notice my aileron servo wheel is on top, this change is in the Turbine and New Tazer manual, and will be in the revised gas manual when you guys get done ripping me up.... It requires the servo to be installed on TOP of the servo mount (with the cutout area underneath), and changing the aileron bellcrank ball location and direction of the legs..... Terry, you can have your balls on the inside this way...!

Hmm, interesting. It looks like you are using no offset on the elevator. In playing with the setup, I found using the same row of holes, but with a single hole offset (like you do on aileron) seems to work well.
Now I can get back to building and videoing. I will do the aileron servo up in the video. Thanks.

Dear Chris,
So, just to be clear, you're recommending that we change over to the new setup? I'm making fine progress. I'm installing my Jewel generator now, following your fine detailed instructions that came with the Bergen mount. I've removed the "popsickle stick" and related linkages, which is great because it will give me another chance to practice my technique torquing bearing screws and jamnuts. I removed both screws from one side of my carefully positioned and aligned triple bearing assembly, to mount the template which is thoughtfully provided. Then, when I went to drill the holes for the Jewel mount, I realized that they would very easy going in. Why? Because there are already slots there, apparently for use in mounting the Jewel! Would I be correct in assuming that the above prep work was unnecessary? I mean, it's ok if it was. Like I said I need the practice, and I'm having so much fun with this build, I want it to last forever! I kid Chris! But am I right about the slots, they're good to go? Regards, Stu |

You mean the Aileron Servo flip? It is NOT necessary to do this, I like it because it allows me to keep a closer eye on the servo wheel screw.... It may also allow for more clearance between some of the linkages running through that area.
Yes, after Raja came out with his generator, we went ahead and put the holes in the frames for you. The template is for those who have frames from BEFORE the generator was available.

Terry, yea 1/2 a mm just didn't seem like it would cause too much trouble in this area....

Ron,
Have you been doing any flying lately. I've gotten out a few times to do test flights with the FBL Gasser, but other than a few flights it's been just to cold or too windy or both. The FBL Gasser is really a joy to fly. Lou
