Would you do this?
I am thinking about using 90mm align tail blade with the my 520mm blades to get a bit more tail authority to run some more pitch.
Searching around I found old threads where some people say things like "You are going to have tail strikes" etc. But then I thought about it. People used to use edge 523s and 86mm tail blades all the time. That combo would only be 1mm shorter than 520s and 90mm tail blades. Not to mention, I haven't actually seen any reports of tail strikes. Would you use 90mm tail blades? Note: I am using the lower formula head. |

I have used 96mm blades before with teh stock gaui blades. They were the ones that came on a gobby 570. No strike issues.
However my tail gears didn't like it much. I usually wear my tail gears out every 100 flights, with the bigger blades i was getting around 75 or so (guessing). But I was running the speed up pulley with them. I would suggest teh speed up pulley before the bigger blades, but you should t strike the blades. And I also ran the nx4 headblock now that i think of it, a much lower profile head. |

Thanks for the replies. I thought about it a bit and I have purchased a speed up gear in addition to the align 90mm tail blades. I will try the speed up pulley first though.
From what I understand, the longer blades increase the torque, while the speed up gear increases the speed much more than it increases the torque which means that the loading on the teeth of the gears isn't as high but is more frequent. Hopefully it will be nice to me. |

Can someone link to the speed-up gear? I know there's one for the X3 but had no clue there was one for the X5. Is it for all versions, or just older FES?

It works for all versions. The x5 formula and fes are more or less 100% compatible. There are several threads on this topic if you need more info. |

90mm blades could work I guess but let us know how your experiment goes (I'm not sure how much clearance you will have).
I find 'generally' that if I don't incite bog, then the tail is rock solid. Bog = tail issues. I frequently stab at the collective like it's a bug and I'm trying to squash it and even then with HS, I get no tail movement. If I get bog with a so so lipo, I can pretty easily spin it around in flight even with the speed up gear and KDBB 84.5 Extremes. But...I am flying really aggressively at this point with a big motor and I'm really just trying to see how far can I push things etc before I get issues. It takes this abuse without ever exploding or doing something horrible apart from a little tail slip.

The X7 tail fin fits on the X5 to give you extra clearance if needed. Use some shims on your rear landing gear strut to prop it up a slight bit.
Haven't done this personally but I know it is a recommended solution by Dave at AnythingHeli who knows his way around an X5
