Default X4 or X5 canopy on 425

Does any of the new canopies fit on the 425? Got the possibility to pick up a pair of 425 kits for cheap, thinking about building one and stretching it to a 550 size.

Also, which pinion and motor KV would be best for 550mm blades with the default gearing? Would 1500kv on 14t or 15t pinion be too much?

That would be too high, even with a 60T front gear.

You could use it on 425mm blades. I went with 16T pinion, 60T front gear with my 1600Kv motor. Getting 2800rpm easy.

Using the stock 50T front and 13T pinion would have given me a similar result.

Don't know about the canopies, but as far as gearing goes, there is a spreadsheet that will figure things for you.

You can use a 1300KV motor and gear it down with a 60T front gear and 14 or 15T pinion for 500 / 550mm blades.

I use Turnigy T500 and T550 canopies on my Hurricane

They are both trimmed down a bit so they fit further back than the standard holes (if they came with holes - can't remember ...). And they are held on by the batteries at the bottom - I'll try and post a picture later.
