Plane Radio Setup with DX7

I love heli's but my son is more interested in planes... I bought two used nitro planes to get him out to the field and hopefully get him hooked!

Can anyone direct me to the radio setup on a DX7. There are a few menu's that I'm not sure about. Something like the Finless videos I could watch would be preferable, but any help would be great!

Airplane setup is pretty simple.Im not sure of any plank setup videos.Which menus are you not sure about? Im sure someone can explain it fairly easily.

I figured most of it out... I was unsure about some of the mixing (elev to aileron), flaps for takeoff/landing, etc.

Elevator to Aileron mix. That should make things very interesting.

If you have just bought basic plank models then I wouldn't worry about flaps unles they are on there. the plane will float on fine if it is a trainer and flaps will just complicate things.

It is possible to add flap mixing to ailerons but you will need to set up flapperons and they need individaul servos on the control surfaces. most basic planks just have 4 servos in them unless it is a small foamie and then they often have micro servos controlling individual surfaces.

your basic high wing trainer will be fine with no mixes running at all.

Thanks for the reply stevec. It's not a trainer, it's a Horizon Hobby Tribute 36. I have a separate servo for each aileron, so I do have flapperon turned on. I just left all the mixes and flaps alone for the moment. I flew it the other day with success - gentle circuits (thru a roll in for good measure) - two takeoffs and landings.

Sorry I made the comment and didnt get back to elaborate.On a general basic nitro airplane the 2 mixes I find handy that arent actually nessesary are ail-rud and thr-thr.

ail-rud is nice for general flying as it helps keep the turns coordinated without working the rudder with the left stick so much.It also helps control during landing approaches alot of the time.I put it on a switch though because there are times I dont want it on like when doing aileron rolls especially while vertical.It can also be a hindrance during crosswind landings.

thr-thr lets me have a throttle cut when the radio doesnt have a dedicated thr cut function.

I also use ele-flap on a couple planes that use the ailerons to function as flaps also.

I have instructed from back in the day. I find its in the best interest of a beginner to leave all mixes out. Make him learn to use his left hand!It will come back ten fold down the road.

Plane set up easy as cake to helis, just make sure the aileron are moving the right direction, you already flew so either you got lucky or figured it out.

Right aileron up makes it go right left one up makes it go left... backwards is no fun...

Wrong approach... I see this a lot. I wouldn't normally bother to post on a thread this old, but I've noticed people doing this a lot with helicopters - they go through the settings screens and try to figure out what to do with each one. This is backwards.

Know what you need to set up. Set it up. Done. Ignore everything else. For a plane you only have three things to set up - only one really. Servo reversing is all you need to set up - most people also set up expo and dual rates. All of those other screens can be ignored.
