Unlucky?
Over the last week I've had abit of shit-luck with my flying. I was progressing pretty good with pretty much no crashes what-so-ever.
Well as you know on sunday some stupid dog took the EXI out the air and slammed into the floor, I wasnt best happy, but when i realised my radix were still good it was all ok again, a fair bit of damage though such as boom, bent frame etc etc. Once that was fixed, earlier this week my scoprion motor shattered its magnets during inverted flight, managed to get it back with no damage - but still a broken motor. The next day I looked up on the net for the closest shop with a scorpion or align 430XL motor so i can run for the rest of the week untill my replacement scorpion arrives. Well even though their online shop said they had an loads of align 430XL motors in stock, they didnt! Only the 430X - and what a load of rubbish that was! Well that caused a pretty big crash yesterday, ruined my radix!!! Smashed boom, snapped tailbox, snapped blade grips and the usual bits. So, last night i searched the net again for anywhere local to get some new V2 blade grips, but they alone are almost £25! so i went to the shop again (60 mile round trip!) and guess what? they had none. I had to buy the full blade grips/central holder set for over £50 just so i could get it flying again for the club this weekend. I bought a plastic tail box as i couldnt afford the cnc one. Then, today whilst flying circuits - no real loops or rolls etc, just large fast smooth figure of 8's etc and guess what? the new tailboix snaps about 300ft high The heli started spinning and came down, luckily i'd been practicing autos abit the last few days and so managed to slow it down abit, but the rotor speed was way too slow due to the snaped tailbox and slammed into the floor. Now i have some really bent frames, a broken tailbox and a broken mixer arm! This has cost me a FORTUNE the last week, all abit of bad luck too!

I bought the CNC head cos I just knew at some stage I would stuff it in, but I also bent the linkage rod, and broke the control rods, parts needed to change the heads. Bugger!!!!!!!!!!! Will also fit the HH gyro at tha same time. my hovering and manoevring were really coming on too. But thats the nature of the hobby...............

Today I was hovering in the garden and I was learning a bit of forward flight. Back and forth. It was all going well but then I started to loose control which I soon regained. I then stared to hover tail in before I attempted FF again but then I was getting near to the table and I can't remember what happened but the next thing I knew, the blades were smashed to a complete stop and the spliners shot across the garden so fast I couldn't see it happen!
I think it maybe coming to the time of the year when we get confident because of the slow wind and sunny weather Hope you get your heli fixed soon grant. Do you know why the tailbox snapped? I will be making a few orders tonight for my head and new blades etc I would like to get the full CNC head but I have just ordered a dx6i so im skint -Jonny |

Well I've just finished straightening out the frame, and its looking pretty good again now
Trip to the model shop in the morning to get an SE V2 cnc tail gearbox, and some mixer arms, but then its pretty much 100% cnc so crashes should get cheaper. I have sent the scorpion motor back as they are going to check it over and send me a replacement, well more of an upgrade Cant wait untill it comes back as I can fly properly again!

Add another crash to the list!
I'm sure its got to be this motor - i didnt crash with the scorpion in apart from when the dog took it down! Luckilyits just main shaft, flybar, feathering shaft, tail blade. I'm going to give f;ying a rest for a couple of days i think as these crashes are starting to realy get on my nerves! and my wallet! Might even take this motor out and not fly untill i get the scorpion back in

It takes the greatest toll on my patience, waiting for the replacement parts to come. Financially, I can take the hit [ wife not looking!!! ], and yes i guess it does affect ones confidence/ego too. Bad luck mate....

My heli is ready to go really. Except there there is no flybar on it lol. As soon as the parts come I should be able to get it fixed in about 15 mins so I will be flying straight away! -Jonny |

Grant you must be getting so frustrated
Maybe you should stick to more 'scale' type flying till your scorpion arrives It doesn't sound like this motor is good for anything else Jonny you can get a CopterX head for far less than a Trex one and itll do the same job I wouldn't buy an Esky cnc one though. I think you'll find that you learn quicker with a decent metal head though

Yep, its getting very frustrating, not because of the crashes, because i seriously cant afford to keep fixing it! considering its £30 just for new blades, and ive spend over £200 in a week on fixing the head/tail and other parts its getting abit much. I might just do some simple flying if the motor doesnt arrive soon, but at the moment i think its comming out. Might be good to have a couple of days break.

Hope things work better when you get your motor back. £200 in a week must hurt.
Ian, I will probably get a CopterX head when I get to be better at flying. At the moment I am learning FF in my garden. Well, lets say... I got bored of hovering so I faced it sideways and moved it forward then turned it round etc.. quite easy, I don't know if it counts as FF yet tho lol.. -Jonny |

Thats great mate it counts as F if not FF
How far away is the nearest field and have you got a sim?

Grant/Dier and anyone else on the scorpion bandwagon...
What do the numbers mean? Which is THE motor to get? This is what I want/intend to do for a while...FFF, mild sport flying (loops/rolls/flips), with max flight time, low heat. Heat right now is my biggest concern. Its warming up here, and my esc and motor from Align are getting pretty hot running in Idle1. I was looking at the CC Phoenix ESC when I decided to heed Dier's advice and stop looking at the 'names'...The Scorpion 45A ESC is $30 cheaper than the 35A CC, So I am thinking of switching to that one. But I have no idea what the numbers mean on the various scorpion motors. You guys seem pretty pleased with them, so what would you recommend based on my 'needs'. Thanks, Cheers, Brian

Yeah second that , can you interpret your motor / esc terminology so a thicky like me can understand it, Like Brian I want long flight times with enough umph for moderate airobatics. Thanks

http://www.micronradiocontrol.co.uk/scorpion_hk22.html
The ones to look out for are the HK2213-14, HK2221-8 and the HK2221-6. In order of theoretical power - HK2213-14 = 320w, Align 430XL= 350w, HK2221-8 = 426w and the HK2221-6 = 525w. The lower power scorpion is actually more efficient and runs very cool, but i still believe it to ACTUALLY be more powerfull than the 430XL and has longer flight times, minimal change in times though. If your just looking for fast sports flying/flips/loops etc, then i would say go with the HK2213-14, this is a very good balance of power, temperature, flight times and cost. But if your looking into trying some hard 3d without wanting to upgrade soon i would look into the HK2221-8 as this gives serious power and still reasonable flight times (a tiny bit less than the 430XL). If you just want pure crazy with head speed to match (4400Kv) then go for the HK2221-6, but your packs will get eaten and your flight times very short. Basically, the HK22 part is what your mainly looking for - this means its the type that physically fits into the trex, the only other part you need to look at as the Kv rating, which the ones listed are the best match for a trex or other 450. Then its just the power you want to look at. Compare the motors as if the align is actualy 300w rather than 350w as its abit excadurated. For speed controller, the scorpion commanders are fantastic, i use the 35A version which will run both motors apart from the 2221-6 as this pulls alot more. You can get away with running it, but you may aswell go for the 45A if you want that motor. These motors and ESC's are not only very good, but very cheap too. Oh, you get a 2 year warrentee too, which came in handy. I asked the shop i bought it from if its a common thing for them to fail, and he has never had one returned before, so i guess i was the unlucky one.
