Default Another worn out pinion...

It's crazy that this is happening. I have NEVER heard of this happening to anyone with any heli...ever. My pinion teeth are razor sharp. The teeth on my main gear are also worn a bit, but not like the pinion.

There's what appears to be about 50% loss of metal there. Pretty amazing.

I just put in a new pinion and main gear. I lightly brushed some Tri-Flow Lubricant on the main gear with a Q-Tip, so we'll see how it goes. I will be sure to report back. This is my 3rd pinion and main gear. The first one I lubed with WD40 like the manual states...big mistake. It wore out the pinion and main gear BOTH in about 20 flights. The second pinion and main gear, I lubed with white lithium grease. It lasted a bit longer, but made a bunch of black sludge and then wore out after about 60 flights. Now I have about 80 flights on the Goblin and I have changed them out for another new set (pinion and main gear). Hopefully, this very light coat of Tri-Flow lubricant will do the trick. We shall see...

Hmm strange. Over 100 flights for me and my main gear looks great. In fact when I put on the main pinion mesh was extremely tight again.

I used WD40 a few times during the first 10 flights. The pinion has worn but the main gear is close to perfect.

I put TriFlow grease on mine with a q-tip... Hopefully that will help.

I think any grease can make things worse. Dirt, pinion debris, main gear debris seem to build up and grind it out faster.

Grease was the wrong word. Was typing faster than my brain was thinking apparently.

This is what I used.

Will this be ok?

Tri-Flow lube or Silicon spray lube has been used to lubricate Logo herringbone gears for years. It should be good to go.

Had 115 flights on ky first pinion before it was worn down, like onthesnap I found the mesh perfect when I changed the pinion meaning main gear had very little wear. About 20 flights with new pinion, and I'm no longer seeing black dust and no wear to speak of. Will report back after another 50 flights

I've heard a hardened pinion is in the works, but don't quote me.

I'm running mine dry now to see if the pinion lasts longer. That oil stuff will fling off pretty quickly and dry up. So will require frequent reapplication. With the soft pinion and big debris build up, I still worry any oil will become a friction agent and increase wear unless cleaned and reapplied very frequently.

Check your pinion. I bet it's completely worn.

Could this be an issue of too much WD40 when applied? I put a quick spray on a use a towel to wipe up any that i can see to just leave a VERY thin coat.

My pinion is wearing out too, but I think I have slowed it down a little. I have about 40 flight on mine.

What I did is took the main gear and pinion out; then I cleaned both of them really well with dish washing soap and tooth brush. I also changed the bearing right below the pinion because that was toasted and created extra vibration on vbar. I guess all the dust and debris got in the bearing and broke it. I put it back together and running dry; no lubricant at all. I still see dust but not as much anymore. We will see how long it will last. My next pinion I will not use any lubrication either. My main gear is not worn and should be able to be used on my next new pinion. I did notice that the dust is coming more from the pinion and not the main gear. I plan to use compressed air to blow all the dust and debris at the end of the day.

Sab should make a harder pinion....

I'm about to chage third pinion already!

I've found it really doesn't matter if you use WD40 or even nothing and it still lasts only around 40-50 flights till your teeth are like razor. Only the steel one will solve this issue.

As expected! Steel pinion is best bet. But the main gear will waste for sure and then replacements will be triple the cost of a pinion.....just hopefully the main lasts 100+ hard flights without stripping.

I have owned about 10 helicopters or so over the years, and this is the first time I have ever needed to change pinion or main gear because of wear. Why is this an issue with the Goblin? Not complaining, I take a pinion change at 100 flights over stripped gears anytime

Changing after 100 flights? We are talking about changing it after 40 flights or so. It's ONE WEEK in my case!
