Always unplug the battery in the heli first, the turn off the transmitter. Turning of the transmitter first is asking for trouble. However, you should be able to set up fail safes in the esc to shut the motor off if it looses transmitter signal.

It really shouldn't matter when you turn the TX off though if you have the failsafe setup properly. I'd redo your failsafe setup if I was you.

Think about it....if you turn off the TX...what is telling the heli to stop?
Turning of the TX instantly stops all communication with the heli and radio so the heli is now out of control and won't stop or start....It will only do what the base program in the RX says to do.

Re-do your fail safe set up and NEVER have power to the heli if there's none to the radio...NEVER
