Default N5c | YS 60SR | Fuel Line Plumbing

Gents-

So this is my first nitro and I need a bit of help with the fuel line plumbing. I checked the manual and I'm not clear on routing and have a few questions:

See Pic to reference questions.

1. The tube (35mm) that goes into the check vale shows that going back into the fuel tank. Is this supposed to go in the top nipple of the N5c tank?

2. The tubing with the filter that goes into the nipple connected into the fuel chuck and into the carb seems simple, so anything I should note on this connection?

3. Where does the line connected to the exhaust go?

4. Many folks have talked about defueling, how is that done?

Is there a reference that can walk me through the plumbing to help me better understand the installation?

Many thanks, Ray

Yeah it can be a little confusing. I have ran that exact motor so let me just spell out how I plumbed mine:

First, the YS60SR is a pumped motor meaning it uses crank case pressure to charge the fuel system, not the exhaust. What this means to you is you will need to plug the nipple on the exhaust pipe. The pipe should have come with a 4mm screw that fits in place of the nipple. I would strongly recommend JB Welding that screw in. Loctite will just melt in the heat. Put some JB Weld on the threads like loctite and snug it down.

Plumbing:

You will have a line coming from the back of the motor, into the check valve and then into the top nipple of the tank.

You will have another line coming out of the main fuel stopper into a T and or fuel filter then into the carb.

I strongly recommend you add a T to the pressure line after the check valve before the tank nipple. This will allow you to vent the tank pressure after every flight. You will also need to open this vent to fill the tank. If you forget to vent the tank while refueling the pressure will build until one of your lines pops and that makes a mess.

I have added a picture of my plumbing. I hope this helps!

You can't see my check valve because I ran the pressure line inside the frames between the tank and motor mount. Make sure you check the orientation of the check valve before you hide it like this. You need to be sure you can blow through it one way and not the other. You want the engine to be able to blow pressure into the tank but not suck fuel back into the crankcase.

AS for your defueling the heli, that is preference. I prefer to leave some fuel in the tank to keep the clunk (fuel magnet) and clunk line wet. Doesn't need to be full and you certainly want to make sure you vent the tank pressure, but i leave about half a tank in mine for storage.

Defueling is easy, simply pull your vent plug and connect your fuel jug like normal. This time reverse your cranking motion this will draw the fuel out of the tank.

Chris- Can you point me to a link for the "t" and pressure release valve on your setup? I searched a few sites and they must not be called pressure release valves because I'm not finding them.

You will need one pack of these:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXK138&P=ML

Although I recommend you get a second so you aren't screwed if you drop one in the grass.

And you will need these:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXES14&P=ML

The Vent is nothing more than the pressure line going into one side of a "T" then I run one side of the T into the tank and the extra side has a plug in it. Pull the plug to vent the line.

This is the fuel filter I use, although Align makes one with the fuel fill T built in. They were out of stock last time I ordered some.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXFRL5&P=ML

Here is the fuel pinch shut off i run. I only use this because it is hard to disconnect fuel and put a plug in while manually pinching the line.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXNSD2&P=7

You will see some guys run a second fuel shut off on the line to the carb. Pumped motors don't need this for fueling BUT it is handy if you ever have to manually shut down the motor do to a throttle servo control issue.

These are the Align filters Chris mentioned. I like these or the Thunder Tiger ones.

+1 on the fuel line clamp between the filter and the carb. I had a brain fade moment last weekend that resulted in a hot start on my N7 and the only way I was able to shut it down was to clamp the fuel line.

I didn't look through all the posts, I'm sure someone mentioned Fuel Magnets. Get the Lynx Fuel Magnets. I actually won a set of the replacement filters at a fun fly but I have the other brand so they wouldn't fit and I traded them with Rodney. The brand I'm using would work ok but you need to put fuel in your tank RIGHT away after you fly because the exhaust gas from your muffler that pressurizes your tank will eat the fuel magnet. The lynx ones aren't as susceptible to the fumes eating them.

Ok... got it on the fuel magnet. A question or two if I may.

I've looked up the Lynx Fuel Magnets and found a few posts that says they need to be installed with the Hayes Chuck Line. Then I found a few more posts that recommend the OS Fuel Chuck rather then the Lynx which some say float in the tank.

Can you gents confirm if I need the Hayes Chuck Line with the magnet and if I should go with the OS Fuel Chuck or the Lynx?

Thanks again guys for all of the help. Ray

I have Lynx MOAS clunks on all three of my nitros and I just use the clunk line that came with the kits. When you first install it, the clunk might be just kind of hanging above the bottom of the tank and not touching the bottom, but once you fill the tank and the felt soaks up some fuel, it will get heavier and work as you would expect a clunk to work.

Also the clunk line will soften up some once it soaks in the fuel a bit.

And it will expand and stretch a bit too. Just a few things to take in to consideration when cutting the clunk line to length. You want it to be able to touch the bottom of the tank all the way to the farthest corner but you dont want it to be so long to the point it gets stuck and doesn't suck up fuel when you change attitude.
