Maintenance intervals on 450x
So I've been flying my 450x and it's a blast. I now have 23 flights on it. I check the belt tension typically before I go out to fly it, and I've checked the screw tightness as well, and slightly lubed the bearings because it was snowing a little once when I was flying.
I was wondering what other things I should check and when are good times to look at them? Thanks |

okay I'll start doing that. Is there anything that should be done with the servo's? other then just the travel and direction checks that I do pre flight?

about every 30 or 40 flights - I put a drop of that scorpion motor oil on every bearing in tail section - dont forget that tail belt shaft driven by the auto gear down in the rear frame that's kinda of tricky to get to....there is a bearing that's prone to failure at top and bottom of it..
- also run a dry lube (bike lube) on main gear teeth / swash slide area on main shaft / tail shaft under slider / pitch rod guides -

At every power up - in TH - check those servos - make sure they're moving right direction - and have full range.
About 1 out 100 times - a fbl unit will not boot up correctly - although the Bx is better than some others... Really these models are almost carefree - TILL - you have a CRASH - that's when your mad skills of keen observation and patience come into play - Dont be too quick to get it back into the air - actually the cause of most of my crashes - something missed....

when i go to fly I do a visual inspection on the helicopter every time i get to the field. Check the bolts, head and swash, excessive play, make sure all is moving freely, lube the bearing and Make sure blades are tight and check for damage.
Preflight check. Make sure the flybarless gyro responds correctly to input and movement. Tail and main motor. The i go have fun. sent via roflcopter to tapatalk |

Thanks for all the ideas! I like doing the maintenance and working on them just as much. Well my larger ones haha I just had to use my observation skills and try to fit my fat fingers on the linkage for my nano today after I hit a telephone pole haha

One drop of bearing oil on the top and bottom motor bearings every 6 flights will help keep it running sweet.

Also, I see that the mainshaft and feathering shaft seem to come pre-greased when you buy them off the shelf (at least it looks that way in the store...) What's recommended for keeping the head moving smoothly? |

Yeah I put a drop of oil on all the bearings probably every 7-10 flights. I am having a hard time getting to the shaft for the belt drive up by the main gear though.

Go through the square hole between the belt inspoection slot and the maingear on the right hand side of the frame (looking from rear to front) with a needle applicator. I use a head light as well so I can see where the oil is going. I usually do this every 12 flights, 1 drop of oil.

What about blade grip thrust bearings and one way bearing?

All I know is that I fly my helis pretty often and almost never oil the bearings unless I have the heli torn down for maintenance. At that point I usually just replace any radial bearings if I have any inkling that they're getting worn. Same thing with the grip thrust bearings, I only re-grease them if and when I have the grips taken apart for whatever ancillary reason. In my experience I'm much more likely to crash the heli and replace the bearings before they're going to wear out due to normal use. I feel like oiling them too often could potentially make them wear out faster if it breaks up the grease in the bearings and attracts dust. I'm still on the original, nearly 2 year old OWB on my 450X and I've never re-greased it or anything. I have a NIP spare that I'll swap in if it ever starts acting up, but so far it's shown no signs of letting up.

Most bearings will fling the grease out of them pretty quickly unless sealed for life bearings are used, either that or the grease is forced to the side of the bearings where it is of little use and would be better if it was not there. Dry oil (specifically for bearings) does not attract dust and penetrates past any metal shielding. Heli Option bearing oil also seems to give good results (I've been using it for the last 5 or 6 months), as does Scorpion oil.
Thrust bearings I just regrease (with Hudy Premium Bearing Grease) when ever I take the grips apart, usually when I rebuild after a crash.
