1st test flight DISASTER
ok ... my 1st build on trex 450 pro ... I'm using a Devo 8S transmitter ... I THOUGHT all was set up right .. had some help from guy at heli store .... i put on my training gear and i go outside to test ... as I'm giving throttle i noticed that the heli is pushing down instead of UP ... and at that point the DARN blades shot out along with the assembly and the linkage rods ... so now I've ordered a new main head ..
but I NEED TO KNOW .... what do i have to do to get the heli to go up next time instead of going down into the ground .... all help is greatly needed and appreciated ... again I'm using DEVO 8S with 801 receiver and its in the 3GX system of the tree 450. thx |

Never "thought", but just make sure 100% that all is working correctly.
As your first build I strongly recommend you go and have a look at the Finless 450Pro build vids...they are great for understanding. I don t know the Devo tx, but in your case you have the collective pitch reversed. go through the setup onece again and make sure the swash is moving and compensating in the correct direction before even to power up the heli. This will avoid any trouble and the possibility to injure yourself or either someone else. Depends on your setup of course but you should have a couple degrees negative pitch at zero stick, and zero pitch at 50% stick. Your heli should be sucking itself to the ground until you approach mid stick. Why it came a part... hard to say without being there but I'm glad I wasn't there. I'd be feeling your pain & frustration.

so the blades and grips came flying off? locktite my friend...check ALL bolts that screw into metal..everyone of them need to be locktite'd.
also to change the swash direction for the throttle, it is in the swash mix...adjust the pitch value it will have a + or - sign by the value, if it says + change it to -..and vice versa if it says - change it to +. dont reverse the throttle channel..thats not what you want. anything else just ask. chris

How could you miss this while setting maximum and minimum pitch?
+1 on the swashplate settings. Change the "pitch" value from positive to negative or vice versa. If you reverse throttle, your motor is going to turn full speed when the throttle stick is down. No fun

It happens, my first cp heli spent months trying to get off the ground. But, I did not have the good sense to get help. Once you get it down, once it 'clicks' you will get into the air without having to think about it. It will come.
And true, you can't trust the factory assembly, check everything. Personally, I wish they would not assemble it at the factory so I did not have to take it apart.

i'd need to see what you have of the head
but I would say a new feather shaft and some linkages and possibly a main shaft any you would be ok (blades also) if the main grip came loose it was either a bad bolt, bad feathering shaft or a total lack of thread lock on both sorry for the mishap but in this hobby its not "if your going to crash" its "when are you going to crash" it happens to all of us

Did you spool it all the way up past mid-stick? If you were still below mid stick, some negative pitch is normal. The blades coming off is probably unrelated. If the grips went with the blades and one of the grips still had the feathering shaft in it with no screw in the free end, it was either lack of thread locker or a bad shaft or screw.
