Question rate mode

I'm setting up my heli and if I'm in rate mode the tail servo doesn't recenter itself when it's on the bench, is this normal? will it recenter itself when it's in the air?

Yes, the Gyro is waiting for the Heli to turn. Try turning the heli a little bit on the bench. You will see the tail will move then to cmpensate

First remove horn from the tail servo. While in rate mode install horn at 90 degrees. Now you should have equal throws on left and right input. Attach your linkage rod and center your tail blades. Now add about 3 degrees to the right (mechanically) Put in heading hold and go fly.

Do you mean that the tail slider won't re-center?

If so, you're not in Rate mode: Rate mode only corrects the tail for unwanted yaw movement; as the tail is rotating, the gyro attempts to counter-act the unwanted yaw/rotation until the rotation/yaw stops. Then the gyro will re-center the mechanics until the next unwanted yaw...so, while the heli is sitting static on the ground, the tail should re-center as the gyro isn't sensing unwanted movement.

In HH mode, the gyro senses an unwanted yaw/rotation from the last commanded heading and corrects the heli until it's back on the last known commanded heading. This is why in HH mode the tail slider will stay to one side while the heli is sitting static on the ground...it keeps giving correction, and maximum correction at that, due to the fact that the heli isn't yawing to the desired heading.

Rate mode doesn't care what heading the heli is on, only that the heli isn't yawing/rotating...HH mode, want's to be at the last given heading, so the gyro will keep correcting until it's back on the correct heading.

hmmm, if the thing you say is right, I'm wrong, it's HH mode I'm in now? if i give left rudder the slider stays there in the last given position

Yes, I am correct and you're in HH mode...

In rate mode, while on the ground, you should be able to give a rudder input, let go of the stick and the tail slider should re-center w/in a couple seconds.

Just a bit OT but does anyone FLY in rate mode anymore? Is it useful for anything other than setting up the tail?

Some scale fliers like rate mode for that more realistic flight characteristic..

I fly in both....I set up my tails in Rate with mechanically correct pitch for holding the nose....this way I can fly both. Its great practice flying in rate, and in FF its different then flying in HH. But when I'm hovering around and doing some slow movements and hovering.. flying in rate is great experience. When your hovering and moving around slowly, it takes some work to keep it in check.. I like to use this as practice for if and when the tail may become unstable...not the same as a completely blown out tail.. but anything I can do to get used a more dificult level, I like to try.
