Will do. Got an email from Oringsandmore yesterday saying they were shipped. USPS tracking only says "Tracking information not available at this time" 36 hours later LOL. We'll see.

Saw an earlier post about the horns slipping in hard 3d without orings. Do they do fine with the rings and hard 3d?

Re: Servo saver mod
Got mine to slip today with mild 3d then an unfortunate earth mating. I think they slipped in flight leading to my impact. Cant be fully sure tho. Mine are bare, no o ring. I think I will be putting the rings on ASAP. No damage other than my pride, need to find some kind of ring. Maybe my trex 250 skid nuts or something. Any word on the o rings and more testing?

Re: Servo saver mod
Whats the odds of using heat shrink.? Slide it on, shrink to fit tightly.

Heat shrink.. I like the idea. But will it be to tight and not slip? I guess I could test now that I have some extra gears..

I think I'd still like to get some of the red silicone o-rings just because I think they'd look cooler being red.
But I can confirm that the blue, 80 durometer dampeners from the Blade 450X/3D that gabe suggested are about the ideal size and tension....not too tight, not too loose. Slice them in half and they're about the ideal thickness. Measuring with calipers they appear to have ~3.75mm ID and ~7mm OD. So that's somewhere in between the #6 (1/8" 3.175mm ID) and the #7 (5/32", 3.97mm ID) red silcone o-rings. Since these dampeners are 80 durometers to the red silicone o-ring's 75 I would think either of these #6 or #7 would work. The #6 should stretch enough to fit over the horn and would provide the least chance of slipping in flight. And the #7 would be looser and easier to slip in a crash. So my guess is that #6 works good for hard 3D guys who don't crash often and #7 is good for beginners that aren't pushing it as hard and who may crash more often. Of course that's just a guess, so I'm still interested to see the results with the actual o-rings. Another tip is not to torque down too tight on the screws or it will open up the horns at the split. You want to torque down just to the point where it barely starts to open up the split and then back it off a tiny bit until it's closed.

Servo saver mod
I've used heat shrink tubing before. Doesn't work as well. And yes, it's very important not to tighten down the screws all the way.

I gotta say..
This mod has now saved me at least two sets of servo gears in each servo. I just smacked the blades into a window frame and knocked some paint off the wall (oops) and no stripped gears... No bent spindle (Lynx) and no bent main shaft( RKH CF). The servo arms jumped two spots on the servo spline so that was at least one set of gears in two of the servos. Bravo! Smack it into a wall... Move the servo horns up and fly.... Pretty damn good in my book.

But the question still remains, do the horns hold position during hard 3D with the orings.
So far it's known that they don't, without the orings. |

Well I did about 7 batteries worth of hard flips and tick tocks yesterday without the o rings and nothing slipped. It was also very fast flying and changing directions rather quickly.
Just this morning I put on some heat shrink until Go For It test fits the three different size O rings.

Re: Servo saver mod
Mine slipped without anything, so now I have cut up 250 skid nuts on them. Maybe I screwed too tight, dunno.

I've never had them slip in flight with my o-rings. And I fly the piss out of it.
There's always a slight chance that over time it'll wear enough that the o-rings aren't enough. if that happens, there are ways to try to fix that, with CA maybe. Or just buy new horns. That would be seldom enough that this is still worth it, IMO. |

I got out to the field today and proceeded to fly the crap out of all of my helis. But this was the first day I really stretched out the TRex 150 and started trying some more advanced maneuvers. I was never able to get the horns to slip in flight no matter what I threw at it. I'm currently using the cut up Blade 450X 80 durometer dampeners as o-rings like we discussed above.
Late in the day I did get a little overconfident and managed to put it into the ground inverted on the head. I have some other concerns regarding the quality of the screws and assembly job of the head, but the good news is that all three of the servos came through unscathed thanks to this mod. All three of the horns slipped on the splines and none of the gears were stripped. I simply popped the servos off the heli, removed the horns, re-centered them on the servo, screwed them back down and popped them back in their slots...walla. I'm a believer!

You actually don't even need to pull the horns off. At least, I don't. With the heli still powered on, I center the pitch on my TX, then I can grab the horns and notch them back to center. I've always done it this way without damage. Quick and easy.

What do you think post
Servo Horn Set HSP15003 $4.99
When I get the above will split a set of servo horns but I was reading thru the post. Needed Tight screw on horn but Split horn with a tight screw opens up the crack which causes loose horn problems. Fix Stop drill the horn crack Drill a small hole near or at the base of the horn screw Then split the horn with a single edge razor to the drill hole (stop drill crack). What do you get? Well you now can tighten up the horn screw as much as you need and still get a split servo horn. I would think you may need to do 2 stop drill splits in the horn but we will see.

Cool, I'll try that next time. I was just trying to be ultra careful since I don't have any spares at this time.

I did the mod yesterday. I used 5/32" nitrile orings from the auto parts store. Flew some hard 3d moves today, and the horns didn't jump any teeth.

Well I finally received my Oringsandmore 70 durometer silicone orings today. As stated earlier, they are:
# 08 = 3/16'' or 1/32'' smaller then the horn foot # 07 = 5/32'' or 1/16" smaller # 06 = 1/8" or 3/32" smaller At first sight, #006 is very hard to slip on and will put so much tension that it may deny the very purpose of the mod. Maybe good for very hardcore 3D if the others slip too easy. #007 seem to add the right amount of tension and feels to be the best. #008 don't seem to add much tension. I have the intention of carving a small groove to keep them in place, so this one will probably be on the loose side. If I can find the time, I'll try to do the mod this week. I'll give "Dipweed" stop hole a try while I'm at it and come back with more info after I have tested them. P.S. To "jimmy77611" How can a 9/32 nitrite o ring fit if my #007 (5/32) fit just right. Is this the outside diameter?
