470l head transplant
I am wondering if it will be possible to put the 470l head on my 450l . I like the swashplate driver arm things , it should take stress off of main links. The swash itself looks beefier. I think it is an eveloution, it seems other brands use this type of setup. Just wondering......

I have been wondering the same thing and trying to figure out a way to get that head, swash and all on other helis. I'm not sure about the 450l at the moment as I don't have one. I can say that so far I don't see a way for the other align 450s.
The shaft is where it will be tricky to get done it's bigger in diameter. In fact the whole head and swash is much more beefy. It's a very nice setup. If your still curious about it I can take a few crude measurements of it for you.

There is a video about using a 6mm shaft on 450.
I would guess you can easily use the 470L head. The concept works well with Forza 450 / Mini Protos / X3 heads. I am going to do this later this winter! |

Main shaft is now 6mm (5 on 450L) so it wont fit as a drop in part. EFL head from 450Pro will work if you dont want to use the DFC head it comes with. I think the main reason they are going back to EFL is that the DFC is to rigid, it works great running high head speed but does a bit worse on lower head speed.

Head swap
I was just wondering,'what ,if ...'. No mine haven't broken. I am aware of shaft size diff, and I was thinking bearings with a larger hole, and would
have to cut shaft shorter. I am a machinist and enjoy doing stuff like that. Maybe I should just get a 470l. Sounds easier , really have no problem with 450l, it is great. |

After checking out that video I'm thinking I'm going to try it out on my 480n.
I have already swapped out the Chinese head for an align one off a pro and am going to put the tail boom, pitch slider, tail grips and landing gear from a 470 on it. Of couse I will have to machine out the tail boom block a bit for the larger diameter, but I think it will be worth the trouble. Now if I could only get main and umbrella gears that didn't suck on it I would be all set. By the way, if you did get a 470 I don't think you would be disappointed. It's still probably a bit early to tell but I am really liking mine so far. It's very smooth and feels great in the air and the landing gear that keeps the tail up off the ground is awesome.

I think there are more benefits with 470L design then just the new head. I think they have taken care of everything I don't like with my 450L with it. I like how the dfc flies but I hate fixing it, the small dfc links is a pain in the... I love that they lost the TT and went belt, going to save a lot of annoying umbrella gear replacing if you start from grass. The new stance is nice, get the tail out of the grass. I have ordered new 470L skids to try if they fit my 450L. I might just get one to... it looks nice...

I do believe the skids will fit with no problems even back as far as the pro helis. Yes the stance keeps the tail out of the rough quite nicely. It takes a bit of getting used to but I'm loving it so far. The belt tensioner is a bit useless IMO and I relied upon the old fashioned way of doing things on my 470.

skids
I'm super duper interested in putting the skids on my pro's. Please, if you try it, keep us updated. I've even thought of putting my skids in the oven to try and give it a lower profile in the front. why not?

Call it vanity, same reason I didnt like the 500 skids mod. I like mods but only if they look like they are stock or at least was made for it

Because there still is a main gear and OWB that is not 6mm?

It's worth a quick mention here, if you would like an efl type of head on your 450 without having to go through the 6mm hassle it pretty easy and cheap. It retains the dfc main shaft, grips and feathering shaft.
The parts that are needed are easy to source, so you can keep the whole thing align if you would like to. The parts needed are mainly; Old FB style swash Followers from a FB head FB levelers 450l head block with the split bolts Misc hardware Various linkages I have built one up you can see on this heli here https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=760560 I have found there are a good number of different parts combos to put it together so it all should be cheap and easy to get. So far it's worked out very well and feels good in the air. I have flown it for 20+ flight now and it's doing well. I even managed to crash today and there was no damage to it. The blades, boom and 1 servo on the other hand didn't fair so well. If there is some interest from others I can do a write up with part #s and some basic instructions for it.

Cool, That looks pretty good. I might have to try that.
Changing the tail to belt drive is out of the question and I wasn't really after that. But the head mod is! Thanks |

Just a comment on the original subject. But if you change to a heavier shaft because the current one bends on a crash, it is only going to transfer that force elsewhere, starting the bearings and through the frame, it has to.
Is 10 minutes changing a shaft really that big a deal? It can't be a cost thng because the shafts are as cheap as chips. I don't recall bending a shaft during flight, unless of course that flight ended with a crash. Just my thoughts, but to each his own.

Thousand of 450's flying perfectly with stock shafts, I cant see what the reason would be to spend $$ to upgrade to a thicker shaft. Apart from the looks
