As Grumpy says, 12s isn't really more expensive. 160A HV ESCs might be expensive, but on a 12s 600, 100A is plenty (some of the older models came with 70A ESCs).

Okay, maybe there is one extra cost: a dedicated BEC. HobbyWing's UBEC is pretty good for the money. (Most ~100A HV BECs don't include a BEC, and you probably don't want the hassle of charging a separate receiver pack.)

You can in any case run 6S or 10S or whatever, so long as the ESC is compatible, motor kV is appropriate and your wires can take the amps.

I think the key question is how you plan to fly this heli. There are plenty of options for 6s if you're ok with low HS, big air 3D. (And there are some pretty awesome pilots who fly this style.) Check out the low HS forum for interesting threads and lots of good info. If you want the HS for smack, going 6s in a 600 will be pretty rough on your batteries (you'll definitely want low-IR, high C), and you need a more expensive ESC.

Conversely, wouldn't it make sense to have a light 600 that could fly on two of the batteries from your 500?

The Trex 600 originally shipped as a 6s machine. We all found out in short order that what we typically expect of a 600-class heli will eat through 6s packs like potato chips. It was completely common for me to only get 20 cycles on a 25c pack (the best available at the time) and i eventually upgraded through 8s and 10s to 12s where I found 600-class nirvana. Eventually, Align cut over their 600 to a 12s setup which obviously solved the problem.

The 550-class performs very well on a 6s system while still delivering the performance we expect. And, I think that's where you find most manufacturers these days drawing the line.

That said, if you are interested in low headspeed, longer flight time options, 6s on a 600-class (and even 700-class) platform is ideal. you're losing about 1/2 the pack weight (going from 12s 3300 to 6s 5000), but halving the headspeed from 2200 to 1100 (or whatever kv/gearing you plan on using). with a good FBL system any wobbles associated with normal low speed flight can be minimized/absorbed. If you are patient you can find a used logo 600 and easily stretch it with the SE boom (or get lucky and find an old logo 600SE airframe) that will provide you a super-light platform that you can add weight to in the name of pack capacity. Then you can swing 690s at 900rpm on 6s. And, you technically aren't running a 700 ;-)

Head over to the low headspeed forum for more details.

Another hf just suggested a goblin 570 on 8s as well. Decisions decisions.......

I dunno, I have a full size of electronics from a goblin 500 and a couple hobbywing 100 about, was hoping to keep it in that range. I also have a 550 stretch out for a g500 too. But, I wanted to break the 600 barrier at least.

Regarding flying style, I plan to get to big air 3d at least. I don't have the budget for smack 3d, lol

actually a bit smaller but the Diabolo 550 is an excellent light weight machine running 6s packs. Sure not a real 600 size but since you consider a bit smaller already you may want to look into it.

Ended up deciding on the goblin 570 in 8s. If I ever decide to go to 12s, it wouldn't be that much of a leap. Haven't looked yet, but there's probably a stretch to get it to 600 too
