Default Downed bird

I'm still quite new to r/c helicopters and was flying my first CP today (Tarot 450-secondhand)...was going good until it started to pirouette uncontrollably on its own about 30' in the air. So I turned the kill switch on hoping that it would land and not get damaged much upon impact. Anyway, it DIDN'T, but as I approached the downed bird I noticed a light wisp of smoke coming from the copter. I quickly disconnected the battery and upon inspection found the wire going to the gyro had been mauled by the main gear and had short circuited. Live and learn...but MAN is this a great hobby or what?

It is a pretty common failure point to have the grub screw back out of the hub that connects the tail assembly to the shaft. When that happens, the heli will piro out of control (of course there are many other ways this can happen too). On a 450, generally there is only one of these screws and it is a little one.

This happened to me once (and have seen it at least twice on other helis at the field). Since then I have started putting a bit of Loctite on the shaft where the tail hub connects, and also going heavy on the Loctite on the grub screw.

Welcome to the CP heli club!

This has to be one of the most optimistic "first crash" posts I've seen!

Most people I see with a "first crash" get all Debbie Downer about the repair costs or not knowing how to fix it.

Good for you recognizing it's all part of this game we play!
