Suggested switch locations?
I've been searching around for this and haven't been able to find anything. Are there any guides out there for suggestions on which switch locations to use for different functions? I don't have any heli pilots in my area to learn from so I've been doing this on my own. I'm flying pretty good and progressing along with the help of net videos, etc but I don't want to get too far along and get muscle memory built in to where I've put my switches only to find out later that theres an industry standard that I could have stuck to and had an easier time flying other peoples setups down the road. Looking for things like throttle cut (hold), idle up, dual rates, gyro's, etc.
Thanks in advance, Steve |

Nothing set in stone, it is mostly personal preference. Typically the top right switch on the back of the radio is used for throttle hold and the left switch is used for idle up. Beyond that it's usually all preference.
Hold should be the most easily accessible/comfortable switch to flip for safety reasons. |

The bigger question is how are you holding the radio are you pinching the sticks or using your thumbs, and what radio do you have?

Welcome to Helifreak Steve.
What transmitter are you using?

I'm using thumbs and a Taranis X9d so I can set it up however I want. Right now I have 2 throttle holds set so that I have to turn both of them off before I can throttle up (so that I can't accidentally bump one or the other) - I'm using the lowest toggle on the front left and then the far left top switch for the throttle holds. I also have the training switch (momentary on the far front right set to throttle hold that I'm using for landing as it's easy to hit quickly. I have the large toggle on the top right towards the center for the gyro. I don't have an idle up or dr's set yet as I haven't been doing anything inverted with my 450 as of yet.
On my other radio (a Walkera Devo 6s which I'm using with a Walkera Mini CP) the throttle hold is on the top left and idle up is on the top right - those are the only two switches on that radio. -Steve |

Spektrum mode 2 (DX6i) has TH back right and flight mode top left. Spektrum mode 1 (DX6i) has TH back left and flight mode top right. Almost everything else in the Spektrum range had it assignable. RF mode 2 interlink has TH (and gear) on the back right too. Taranis has a momentary switch as SH and a 2 pos switch and SF (I swap these as I started with a mode 2 DX6i so my TH is on SH and rescue is on the now momentary SF). I use the top left 3 pos switch (SE) as my f.mode switch (same as mode 2 DX6i). End of the day it is you flying your aircraft. So set up your TX so the switches are comfortable to you. You do not want to fumble for switches when flying. Also, with the Taranis you probably have as much transmitter a you will ever need (16 channel, as programmable as a JETI). Any other TX you may ever get will have programmable switches as well. Make switch standard layout that is comfortable for you.

I agree with Archmage.
If you're flying thumbs and are right handed the top right switch is probably the easiest to flip. So set that for TH. I use two switches for this too I have an ESC arming mode that sends the 0% throttle value and the hold value is lower or higher than zero but doesn't cause the motor to spin, but will also not arm the ESC. Some ESCs also know the difference and use this for autorotation bailout, if they see 0% they go into soft start mode after taking hold back off. |

As others point out, it's a personal choice that comes down to which is easier to find in the beginning, while you get used to them. Currently have throttle hold and throttle cut on the left (guess throttle stick left, so are the throttle kills). And idle ups on the right. I use a pinch grip with my left middle finger wedged permanently between the hold/cut and my right middle finger goes on and off the idle ups. As far as switches for the different flight modes; perhaps you can condition your modes with different DR and expos for each of them; so there'd be only one switch to flick and the rest will be "embedded / conditioned" withing that flight mode. For instance, my Gyro sensitivity is permanent HH and conditioned on a sliding (numerical / values scale) to the flight modes (ie. "normal" which is my IU-1 is at 30%, IU-2 @ 25% and IU-3 @ 20%. I'm all for simplicity in the switches and functions because it can get overwhelming and end up using more switches than needed to achieve the same task. Hope this helps some

If you're wanting to start out with a more or less standard set of switch assignments you could always download a DX-7 manual and set up the "blank slate" transmitter to emulate the DX-7 or something similar.
I'll confess to doing exactly that when I first got a DX-18 and later a Jeti. Eventually stuff gets moved around and / or renamed but some sort of "starting point" was comforting. |
