Goals and effort, and a few $$$. You can putz around forever if thats all you wanna do, or you can crash too much due to lack of focus (me). Neither of those will make you the best but they are still valid as long as youre having fun. This hobby is kinda limitless in that there are huge skills needed to do certain stuff, but nobody forces you to do any of it. Its up to you how you want to progress.

My advice- transitions, you have to think ahead a bit but once youre in the groove the transitions smooth out and the flight becomes a routine vs a series of moves. The more you do it the slower it gets in your mind and you can add new stuff as that happens.

I agree, but the major flaw in your example is that the guy has a 700. If you were to downsize to a small heli, you'd get 10X as much stick-time in. Regardless of the 'quality' that the experience gives you, it's experience nonetheless. I see a lot of people focusing on how much they have to pay to play and that's likely a good reason why they'll never go anywhere to begin with.

I also think a lot of people just want to instantly be good. I've met quite a few "only been flying 3-4 months but I think I want to go Pro." I don't have anything against anyone with ambition but I typically never see those guys again in following years. Seems like professional pilots quietly work their way up and don't really go all out looking for sponsorships. It kinda just happens.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a little bit of healthy competition, but I agree. If you get obsessed with being the best, it might not work out as well as you might hope. Then again, some people thrive on working extremely hard and you just gotta do it whichever way works best for you. I think most people progress a lot faster when they're not paying so much attention to how well they're doing and just enjoying themselves.

+1
This is a hobby, meant to be enjoyed in your free time. If you wanna become a competition pilot, that's fine, but that's a whole nother level.
There's nothing wrong with a little friendly competition at your local club though, it can add entertainment. Just don't take it too seriously.

Talent, is the main factor when you are the best. Why then are there not millions of people flying these near imposible moves? I know people who practice on sims and the real thing to no end,and still never can be a top 5 in the world pilot. Why. Because everyones mind is different some people can learn better than others. Some are born with a predisposition to excel at given tasks. Science has proven this already. Its commonly called talent.

I had an uncle that could play any musical instrument you put in front of him. No training, just born with it. If you take someone that has a keen intrest in a specific subject and has a god given gift to catch on quickly, and ole common joe has the same keen intrest but no gift, so who do you think is gonna be the better?

Look at the NBA. all those guys practice since they were old enough to hold a ball. Did michael Jordan, kobe bryant, lebron james practice harder than say Jeremy Linn? Aagain some people are programed to exceed, excel and be the best even without alot of practice. They are born with it. same as some are born with very high intellegience.

flying a helicopter came to me quite easily, i am not scared to crash but i try my best not to for one reason, i cant afford to be crashing all the time. i fly at about 50% of my skill level most of the time, every once in a while i fly at 90% of my skill level and its fun but i have a feeling if i did that all the time i would be spending money quite often. and i really cant afford to do that right now..

if i had the money to just blow blow blow blow, i would fly at 110% of my skill level and i am sure i would be a hell of allot better than i am now..

it does come down to natural talent, drive to succeed, what helicopter your flying, not being scared to fly it, and of course being able to have the money to repair it if you push your self hard every time you go out.. and of course lots of practice on the real thing and the sim makes a big difference too

Well, you've got it right. It's a hobby which is purely for fun. Your skill level in flying rc helicopters is totally irrelevant to anything except your own enjoyment.

Talent and practice is important but don't forget about discipline. You'll never get better if you only practice what you already know. There's an art to putting together an effective training/practice syllabus...ask any athlete, or musician. The pros in pretty much any domain have an acute sense for what their strengths and weaknesses are and attempt to design practice routines to improve upon them.

Cheers
