Has anybody tried an un-modified phase sensor with 1.2 yet? Unfortunately work has kept me from such experiments.

Alas, all is not well!
I plugged in a new, unmodified phase sensor, initially leaving the gear ratio at 8.68 where it had been with my divide by 4 pre-scaler. On the bench, blades removed, I span up the heli (500ESP) and the rpm display on the CGY750 went up to 4602rpm. I then set the ratio to 34.71 which is where it should be without pre-scaling (3*162/14). The rpm reading then hit a limit of 1134rpm, rather less than the required 2700 or so. Admittedly I didn't have a pull-up fitted, and I didn't have my oscilloscope to hand to see if one would be needed, but the simple response is that, unmodified, this doesn't work with firmware 1.2. I've not had much chance to fly since October, but I've recently tried to get the gov working properly with 1.2 and my converted phase sensor and failed to get a solid lock. In the end I switched the gov off on the Tx, which still left the gov enabled on the CGY750 for the purpose of reading the current head-speed from the sensor. This gave the piro compensation the head speed info it needed. Flew very well, albeit with a slight drop in head speed towards the end of the flight.

Will this, along with the Hyperion phase sensor, work correctly?
http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/pro...roducts_id=965 If it will work, that would be great for those who do not really like to solder. I see the latest CGY750 firmware does up to 50:1 gear ratio and 4000 rpm. Does the 8FG allow 4000 rpm to be set directly also? Anyone know how many poles on a stock Trex 450 Pro motor? Assuming 6 poles and accounting for the main/pinion ratio, this would require ~35:1 ratio, well below the 50:1 in the CGY750. |

Hi Steve,
Why or what has caused the governor to not work as well with the 1.2 update? So you can turn the gov off in the tx and the CGY will just use rpm from the sensor for piro compensation but not actually govern rpm? |

Hi Steve,
Okay, I'm a bit confused. If 1.2 update is 4000 rpm x 50:1, that's like 200,000 pulses/minute. Old firmware was 3000 rpm and 30:1? That's 90,000. So 1.2 is more than twice as "fast." Do you think it's the "speed" of being able to interpret the signal or is it that the signal is not the correct width? Trying to use simple words...frequency, pulse width, high, low, etc. confuse me. Anyway, really looking for the simple, no fuss solution. |

If you use the standard sensor and look at the Rev.Sens setting in the Gov basic menu, you'll see a figure of <10% which rises to ~90% when you pass a magnet near it. Clearly the magnet spends less time under the sensor head than not. Consequently the voltage output from the sensor will be <10% of 3V most of the time, and >90% of 3V for a small fraction of the time. Trying to visualise this, using, for simplicity's sake, 8 samples of the input voltage per revolution will look something like (with 0 for logic low and 1 for logic high): 00000001000000010000000100000001 Using the binary divider I used creates a square wave pulse train looking more like: 00001111000011110000111100001111 For the same frequency it can be seen that the second pulse-train has a shorter sequence of '0's. Now if you're using a high input frequency from some other non-Futaba sensor, such as a phase sensor, you may find that whilst the frequency is itself OK, the low time of the input waveform may be too short. At the max RPM of 3000 rpm and using a gear ratio of 30:1 you get a pulse period of 667 us. With a square wave pulse stream this would be 333 us low period. In my experiments I found that such a waveform didn't work. With 1.1 firmware I initially tried a ratio of 17.36 (using a divide by two prescaler on the phase sensor) which didn't work at higher RPM, and had to then use 8.68 (with a divide by four pre-scaler), the end ratio being one quarter of the 34.71 ratio you correctly identified. Even if you were to assume that the 1.2 firmware could handle twice the frequency, it'd still need a divide by two stage. Steve

Thanks for that, Steve...I sort of understand. Joe, I hope you're right and suspect you are but the wait is killing me!

If Futaba were to produce ESCs optimised for this application (ie fast response) with a phase sensor output suitably conditioned for the CGY750, they'd sell a bucket load!

Hey Steve,
Any thoughts on whether the Throttle Jockey optical sensor will work with the CGY? http://modelavionics.com/OpticalSensor.asp |

After a quick bit of googling I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work without modification (possibly the addition of a single resistor, but I'm not sure).
Steve
