Thumbs up brush painting Canopy Q? Art project

I have a project for my two and a half year old daughter. We would like to hand paint a canopy, instead of spray painting like the norm.... The ones I have are white with a gloss coat on it I think.

1. What kind of paint do I need for hand brushes. It seems water based paint probably won't stick. So oil based? What kinds of paint are there? I'm not familiar with whats available.

2. After all paint work is done. How long to leave to dry? How do I seal the paint? Do I need to seal it? Spray on clear coat? Or leave the paint as it is is good enough?

3. What was the highest mountain in the world before Mt. Everest was discovered?

Much Thanks!

John.

Virtually any paint will do. I use waterbased paints (AutoAir), but have used cellulose and 2k over the years. Waterbased are safe. As long as it's not the milk bottle type of plastic, any paint should stick if the cano is primed correctly.

If you intend flying it later, then it needs to be sealed. If a nitro model, then 2k lacquer is a MUST, but very dangerous to apply, so get someone else to do it for you. You may get away with 1k lacquer for a leccy model, but it will yellow with time, etc.

Most commercial canopy suppliers clear coat with 2k. It's just easier if you're set up for it !!

Thanks! That sounds a bit complicated...for the clear coat. What is 1k and 2k?

By the way.. Are these white canopies primed already?

If the canopies are NOT plastic, ie fibreglass, then they'll just be a white gel coat, which needs scuffing up, and then I'd recommend priming. (There are numerous threads on here as to how to paint canos)

1k paint/clear is referred to as cellulose (illegal for most usage in the UK), and 2k requires a catalyst/activator, but gives off cyanide in the air when sprayed. Try to avoid this! The reason folks use 2k is because its about the only thing that is fuel proof, or as fuel proof as it gets. It's what your car is coated with, (with virtually any sort of paint underneath).

Ah okay I see. Thanks for the help, that was very helpful! I'll post some pics in profile when we're done.

Thanks again!
