So did you end up trying the 10t pinion on that thing after all?

Well......
I'm really not sure what has happened ............... the X nova 1860 KV with a 10t pinion was around 2800 to 3050 RPM at 60 to 65% th.... With the NEW X nova 1580 and a 11tooth pinion at 60 to 65% am still around 2800 to 3000..................... the point in the lower KV was to get a larger pinion and be around 85% to 90% and be around 2800 to 3000............. SO I don't understand why there wasn't a drop in head speed even with the 11 tooth pinion...... I'll be ordering a 10T steel pinion and see where I am.... Right now not happy with the numbers I'm seeing..... NOT buying another motor ..... Looking like the 1300 ish KV X nova would have been the one to get...... If I'm still not around 85% to 90% and 2800 to 3000 RPM ... I'll need to go Active Free Wheeling....... maybe the new HW v4 pro60 cheaper than buying another motor...... then I can run the 75% to 85% and the esc wont mind... but still not right as far as gearing goes........Will see how the 10tooth goes then I'll know if I'm going to say ... WHY ME !!!!! LOL

I wouldn't worry too much about the throttle percentage. Even the V3 without AFW were very tolerant of low throttle. I ran my X3 geared for 3000+ at 2500rpm with 380s and it did just fine. And that is with a 1700Kv motor.

The Xnova is considerably stronger than any of the other motors, so you'll probably land right on top of the numbers from the calculations. I always check mine for 100% throttle at the low, mid, and high battery voltages and end up within 30rpm any time I've measured them compared to logs and tachometers. Since you've got telemetry you should be able to check your relative voltage throughout the flight and match your throttle percentages to match the desired headspeed.
I'll try to rework my numbers to show where you'd need to be for your target speed. But with an 11t pinion it was right around 3Krpm at 100% throttle without efficiency or drag losses considered. If you're on a 10t pinion at the end of the battery it should be struggling to stay up around 300rpm if I remember the numbers correctly.

MGPTWEGB, how are you measuring HS?, maybe the tach is off? You should be at lower HS than 3000 (governed) with the 1580 and a 11T. I did a quick calculation and I am thinking with a 11T / 1580kv should be maxing out "governed" around 2700.
Below is a quick calculation I did using a Castle ESC "SET RPM" Gov. this is with a 131 main gear and 1580kv. FYI: A FBL gov (and some other esc govs) would need a little more headroom and max out at a little less HS, but only a 100-200rpm (maybe 5-10%) or so less depending on the GOV. **MAX Governed RPM with a Castle ESC with "SET RPM" mode** A 10T should be maxing out around 2450 with 1580kv. A 11T should be maxing out around 2700 with 1580kv. A 12T should be maxing out around 3000 with 1580kv. A 13T should be maxing out around 3200 with 1580kv. A 14T should be maxing out around 3400 with 1580kv.

Charging now I know it wil be better than what I had.... just need to get it tuned..... Something I did notice on the first setup testing...... in Norm-Mode the heli did't like 40% and lower settings ... It did this once when landing... cut the motor off .... But after resetting the end points and resetting the gov the 2nd time this went away.... Not sure what that was about.

John had the same problem on his 550 last weekend. Make sure you have a linear throttle curve set up before trying to do the calibration!
Should be a no-brainer, but it happens to the best of us. Good luck with your bird today. I'm hoping to go tomorrow if I can manage to finish song up my ESC and receiver. I'm still no closer to it at this point.

I didn't make it out to field today.... but did try resetting the ESC on the bench.....
WOW...... all I can say now after resetting the HW 50 v3 I have 3030 RPM's at 53% !!!! its going the wrong way .... LOL the gov-store isn't doing or learning something right........... I have set the base flat at 50%.... 60% and the last time at 45% for setting the gov....... nothing seems to work... In the forums here they say to set at 50% when teaching the ESC.... I have reset the end points each time I reset the ESC.... I have went back to the factory settings then entered the setting back to the ESC... Dunno......

Ok just tried setting the gov-store at 41% the tm 1000 reported 2450 RPM's I let it run for 20 seconds.....shut it off unplugged the battery.... then reset to 53% in the tx plugged the battery in and 2975RPM's at 53%......
I have an old YGE 100amp setting here..... may just install that and call it done. As I know there ESC's like the back of my hand.

How are you doing the gov store and rpm testing? Was that all on the bench, or are you testing the rpm in a hover with blades on?

ENDED UP USING ELF Gov..
Everything is working as it should. Gov seems to hold well.. Still playing around with it... Have no clue what is going on with the GOV STORE ... just doesn't want to reset. with it set in ELF GOV.......Running 2750 and 2900 right now... Seems to do well ...

Ok How many people still fly this MOD !
Still flying mine.. Just an Update... I did find out what was wrong with my head speeds... My HW v3 50amp ESC was bad... I change the ESC out for a new HW v3 50amp Everything Works !!! and I have the heads speeds that I should have using the gearing and KV motor in use. I also removed the BD3SX .... never could get a good tail .. I installed a Robird G31 it was better but still not as good as I wanted.. Tail first flight was still kicking out... I'm now using a KDS E-Bar ... So far so good ! Main Blades Halo 385's and 3 Halo 62mm tails I also changed batteries... Now running the Nano-Tech 1550MAH 6s packs. getting 3:00 mins @ 3,000 RPM's Still love this bird .... Sure it will get many flights this year !
