Are there any drop in cheap conversions for the Hurricane 425? Spending $100 for a Gaui FBL head isn't my best thought...

Check this thread. The guy started with what I thought was a not so good idea, but he did a nice job in the end, and I don't think it was too costly.

Also, AlleRC has the grip extensions in stock for $4.95..

if you fly a moderate HS and a moderate flying style all you need are two parts:
- Flybarless Main Grip Lever Extension set (For 425~550 Class, Gaui# 204706)
and
- Gaui Hurricane 425/550 Flybarless Swashplate Lock (For 425~550 Class 8MM Mast, Gaui# 204707)
I used these fbl parts with plastic grips on my 550 at ~1850 RPM´s for over one year without any problems.

After that I swapped to a X5 FBLhead which is a direct fit (Gaui# 208500)

If you fly faster rpm´s I would recommend a metal upgrade.

(Jerry was faster )

I fly the 425 fbl after modified the head with
- Flybarless Main Grip Lever Extension set (For 425~550 Class, Gaui# 204706)
and
- Gaui Hurricane 425/550 Flybarless Swashplate Lock (For 425~550 Class 8MM Mast, Gaui# 204707).
I use tarot zyx controller and flies like a dream - I don't do hard 3d, just sport flight.
I have the mid boom conversion with 470 mm blades and gearing : 14 pinion 20 owb, 60 /61 and at 100% flat thottle curve I fly with 2 3s 2650 Nacoteck in series connected about 4:30 with 3.75-3.80 remaining.

Several Northwest heli fliers are enjoying their Gaui 425's stretched to 550 with FBL setups using a variety of FBL controllers (Robird, KDS, etc) with the grip extension arms and main shaft "locking" parts.

No need in our mind for the fancy head. Just mod the plastic grips and FB head block and you will be fine.

If it makes it easier there are lots of FBL heads for Trex 500s which will fit on the 8mm mainshaft - but you could only use 425mm blades due to the narrower rotor blade grips. You can however use the Trex 500 swash lock instead of the Gaui one - I managed to strip one of the threads on my Gaui versions so bought this instead http://www.helidirect.com/align-mixi...fl-p-17762.hdx

Not really. We fly the stretched and are doing sport stuff only. Are you going the 425mm blade size for 3d stuff? Keep in mind the plastic frame may not be the best for hard core stunts, but others here know more about that. Post pics. When hyou get started.

I really like the Gaui. It toys nice and is "different" compared to the trex / clones.

Its stretched to 500 blades with a 550 boom and stronger motor

I fly light 3d not hardcore yet

Want advise? Save up until you can get the X5.

Well, im divided 50/50 about the hurricane being a good heli. My 425 was easy to set and flies like a monster. Just popped a Trex500 FBL head on there and done. its lovely.

The 550......not so much fun as you might have read in my topic in the 550 forum... I was aiming to make it preform close to the X5, but the main hub is just too narrow, grips too flexy and dampeners too mushy, and the tail just too crappy. Might have sorted it out now, need to spend some airtime with it to see.

The time invested in assembling and painting the canopy alone i could have build up an X5 from kit to maiden.

Oh well, painting is realy fun for me. A few more colors and im done:

Well i just ended up trading for a trex 450 completely hopped up with the top electrics so I'll be putting the gaui on hold but the x3 and x4 are very appealing but x5 is prob. Too much

At that price id be going for a goblin i have a tiny budget only being in HS but I'll slowly make my way to larger expensive birds as i get better at 3d

Do the Gaui X5 dampers fit in the Hurricane 550 head?

I know this is an older post but how did this modification hold up? or did you end up getting the swash follower?

The follower is fine, but my nanotech batteries not. The Gaui ate them!

It's grounded untill i can get some decent batteries that will actually hold up getting discahrged in 4 minutes. Looking for a reasonable price, but with the current $/€ exchange rate it might take a while befire i get any.
Will just wait it out and tly the 450 size and 500 size in the meanwhile.

I crashed my 550 a few weeks after that post and picked up an X5. That 550 was nothing but bad luck for me had to walk away from it. Love my X5 though.
