Scorpion Commander 160 ESC OPTO
Hi
im just confused how to programe the esc properly.Iv got a usb cable as i was told earlier that it becomes easy to setup. The helicopter is a logo 700 XXtreme with vbar and i want to use the scorpion esc governor for now. After updating the firmware the options which are shown are. 1.Mode : set to Heli Mode governor 2.Low voltage cut off lim: iv set it to 39 (Is it correct) 3.Low voltage cut off: Cut 50 percent of max power 4.Current protection : Insensitive ( ? ) 5.Motor Timing : Auto timing ( or should it be 5) 6.P Gain : 5 7. I Gain : 5 Now is this all i need to set up. I havnt done any throttle calibration yet. Do i need to and how do we do that with the usb cable.Lastly the throttle curves are as follows: Normal: 0 50 50 50 50 50 Idle 1 : 65 65 65 65 65 idle 2 : 75 75 75 75 75 I tried to hover it like this and once the helicopter gets in the air the rpm fall a bit and stay there until the heli lands and at mid stick the rpm increase again. The spool up rpm is different and they reduce once the helicopter gets in the air. Any kind of help will be appreciated |

Sorry but I have only used it with the Vbar governor so can't help with the internal gov setup.
One thing you should do is make sure you update the ESC to the latest firmware, there have been a few fixes that are really mandatory to take. Look on the Scorpion web site to check if you have the latest version installed. //Dennis.

There is a Scorpion support thread here on HF, post there or read the posts there on setup.

Got 3 of these scorpion 160A ESC's on different helis and they work great for me on all of them...you made the right choice with the USB cable as well, so much better than the fiddly IR controller....
On the first flight after choosing the governor you have to hover at 50% throttle until the led light on the cable to the ESC goes out...then when you land and throttle of the led will come back and you need to wait 15 seconds for it to retain the settings then disconnect the batteries... Then once you have done that make sure you change your normal throttle curve up from the 50% flat to something like 65%....if you have 50% again it will do the governor motor training again on spool up each time which you dont want....on ID1 and ID2 I run 75% and 85% flat throttle line....If you have you motor gearing correct then I find 85% is the sweet spot throttle settings for these ESC's governor.... With your other questions...1) yes, 2) Low voltage cut off, assuming if your 12s setup then around 39-40v is about right, some people prefer higher but I like it low as just a worst case..3) personal preference 4) I use insensitive, 5) I use auto timing 6) P&I gain, 5&5 works ok, but it depends on how big your heli is and how aggressive you want the gov to be, on 700 size I find around P=8 and I=6 works well for me, you have to try different values until you get unwanted tail kicks or bounces...but best to keep I gain lower than P gain... |

Only direct seems to have it.
Seems pretty heavy though. Lots of the Mikado team are moving to this ESC. So it seems really robust. Unfortunately it's one of the heaviest options. But very tired of ESC problems. |

Check YouTube for videos on how to setup the governor.
You have to hover it at 50% throttle and wait for the led light to come off and you are done. |

Guess it's castle then. Shame this isn't in the U.S. at all. With all the mikado guys flying in the heat in competition at 3d cup and raving how great it is. Yet I can't buy the thing. :-/ Disappointed. |

They are really hard to find in the UK as well, as soon as the 160a variant gets into stock they just sell out....considering they are about the same price here as the castle 160 its just a no-brainer on which one to buy....Castles for some reason are a much higher price in the UK than the US which is just ridiculous!....
@Onthesnap, yes it is definitely a substantial "beefy" ESC, much more so than a Kontronik Jive or equivalent...but it fits fine in my Goblins and I have not had an issue with one yet, and I have one in a Goblin Speed on a 14s setup and that gets pushed really hard..... I have found them for sale direct from Hong Kong, some really good prices as well and I as sure they ship worldwide but I personally dont like buying from overseas if I can help it as the time and import duty can really sting.... |

I ordered one yesterday direct from scorpion in Hong Kong. Free shipping and delivers Wednesday!
So zero complaints about ordering direct. Wow! Hopefully this is a new era of reliable ESCs for me. (-: |

Maybe you'll get the follow-on bill for duty. That happened to my wife once with some rugs...

I had one. Sold it. After burning up right away and having it gone to Hong Kong for 2 months getting fixed and then coming back and 2 weeks later a cap fell off with another one close to it I decided sending it off for 2 months again wasn't happening. Went back to castle. When it worked it worked well as long as you use the optio cable and external gov. Mine was an early one so the gov sucked then. It might be better now

Combine the ESC with your Ikon/Brain Gov. Should be a good combo. At your level you wont like the internal Gov. It works ok but not as good as a good FBL Gov. Did you get the OPTO cable for the Gov? Also the V-Link for computer programming is a nice option too. The IR programmer works but you cant see your settings. You just get a Di-Do for confirmation. |

BTW, I hope I get to finally meet you at RCHN 3. Still up in the air for me but as I understand it you will be a judge for the 3D Trials comp? |
