I'm surprised this thread is as long as it is... Oh wait, I shouldn't be being a thread on how to solder on a BEC is over 20 pages now.
Fly what you like..... what's the point in arguing about it?

I'm still FB on my 450, and I'm attracted to the idea that FBL offers me the stability in my trim regardless of the orientation of my heli. I have gone through the setup process with what I thought was the most absolute precision to get the best mechanicals possible-- from suspending my heli from fishing line around the head to ensure CG to using lasers to level my servo arms... and I would still get some CG issue affecting my inverted flight. If FBL will correct this for me, then I see it as a positive much like my GY401 has enabled my tail to hold where I want it to be.
I will say this much... I do like the feel I get in my current FB setup. I fly with no expo +10 & -10 pitch and it is very responsive; but I really like the stability that FBL sounds like it offers. Not sure I want to give up the direct feel though if that is the side effect of FBL. Isn't the FB vs FBL much like the Gyro vs no Gyro debate from years past?

You wont lose the direct feel with any modern system, current VBar, Beastx, Skookum etc. They all have some sort of "FB simulation" you can adjust to your preference. The older ones could (reportedly) feel a bit vague around centre but the newer ones can be made really aggressive (like light paddles) with the added bonus of a flick of a switch making them as smooth and slow as you want.

you can get a 30$ copterx fbl unit that works great for 450s, etc.. cheaper than a tail gyro!

An ASSAN GA250 mems tail gyro is $10. True it's no good for hard 3D but if you're building an ultra cheap helicopter you aren't going to be doing 3D with it anyway. Also FB lets you get away with using cheaper servos than FBL.
