Hello All,

I am very new to the RC heli scene, i purchased a used Walkera
Dragonfly 22e. It's been good to me and i think half the fun is setting
it up with new links and parts - upgraded parts.

I am so new that today was my first day with it off the ground, in the
air, over 4 feet for about 20 minutes total between 2 batteries. It was
a bit windy but i didn't care. I still have the training gear on and not
really sure when i should take it off but i do know that it's staying on
until i can hover with the nose facing me rather than the tail.

Eventually I will want a larger heli, something around the 400 size
and to be honest i hate waiting for parts from Hong Kong so could someone
tell me what a good brand of heli with a bunch of up-grade parts avail.
that is local to the USA. Perhaps the e-flite blade 400?

Also i will need a new Lipo battery, something 800mah or higher and 11.1v
but it can't weigh much more than 85 - 90g... any suggestions and perhaps
if there are other posts of people who have the same heli as i do, i would
love a link to them....thanks so much and so far this is a good site

I also have a Walkera 22E. Are you able to hold it still? Mine still acts like a bee on meth.

I say go with a blade 400 they last a long time and will be with you for a while also the blade comes with a dx6 radio that will help you move up in the r/c heli world. i also had a walker but it was a #36 and they renamed it a raptor g2 and it was ok for me to start but it turned to crap real fast and after that i just jumped up to a t rex 600, but dont worry i had plenty of sim practice and crashing my #36 before i even took up my 600. so go for the blade 400 there are lots of upgrades for it..

Venom Night Ranger 3D parts will fit the 22E.

I believe Helihobby also carries 22E parts.

These fly pretty well, if you get a good one.

It will lift a 1000 mah 3S lipo easily-make sure that you run heat sinks on the main and tail motor.

Do you really need heat sinks on them? They are brushed motors. The lack of Heat Sinks may explain my burning out of 2 motors within 1 month. Yes the NR3D parts do fit, but the 22E parts are cheaper.

I used the heat sinks religiously, after having other, similar helicopters fry the motors (especially tail motors).

I got 37 flights out of the stock main motor on the VNR3D, then upgraded to the brushless. I changed the tail motor every 40 flights, regardless, but never had one fail or degrade.

Although the stock, brushed motor had plenty of power for cruising around, the brushless represented a huge improvement.

Venom parts are more expensive, but they provide technical support and assistance (for those who purchased their machines). Walkera has no support (at least none that I have ever found). The Venom versions, at least to me, seem to be of better quality.

I also have the Exceed R/C Eagle, which is a re-branded Walkera 22E.

I have the metal head and swashplate on mine, which provided a large improvement in stability (should help with durability too).

I sold my Walkera and purchased the Align Trex 450. All my local hobby shops carried the Align Trex 450 parts, in massive abundance.

no offense to anyone, but walkera is CRAP. IMO if you made the mistake of buying walkera please dont waste anymore time with that junk, it will only make your learning curve slower. so save some more money and buy stuff that will make flying a pleasure and not frustrating

No offense taken sir, but sometimes Walkera is all one can afford, or sometimes it is nice just to have an inexpensive machine to tool around with.

It all has its place.

I may fly a 90 one day, then go mess around with the Walkera the next.

I do agree completely that the better the quality of the helicopter/equipment, the shorter the learning time. Something like a TREX 450 is infinitely faster to learn on/fly than a 22E.

Something like a Knight Sport would be far better than either.

i do agree with you, even i started with it cauz i had no idea and very little money, but i ended up spending the same amount of money over a period of 4 months, i realized that if i saved the money i spent on repairs and if i had a little patence i would have ended up with a trex450 or maybe a guai200 plus a realflight 4. i had a #35 and the damn thing was always whining, everyday it had a new problem, i had four crashes, i was my fault, the other three were, gyro quitting, radio glitch, and pitch linkage come off in flight, hope the guys outthere with walkeras are doin better than me. trust me i spent the money i was supposed to buy a car with on my trex 500 but the thing is this, every single time i hit that throttle stick it has just given me sheer pleasure, i agree im just 12 flights old but yes every single one of them was so much fun. who cares about a car anymore

Thanks for the great info. What's the cost for a Trex 450???
and what do you guys think about the Eflite Blade 400, looks
like my local hobby store has a tonne of these parts in stock.

I will have about 250CND into this project by the end of today
and i am stopping there. Gonna learn to hover at "all points
on the compass" and then pull the training gear off....if i'd just
quit raining though....

depends on which trex 450 you wanna buy. price range is 130 for 450xl to $450 for trex450sev2. of course the v2 is metal and tail vs.plastic head and tail for the 450xl

i myself own the trex450sa which retails for $199. i've since upgraded it to metal head and tail. so its basically the se.

Well at least Walkera and esky gets people into this hobby. Trust me i know,,,,,,,,
I started out with an e-sky cp2 and a walkera #36. Some days they would fly o.k.
I won't say it is a POS. But quallity just differs a lot from other brands, plus the fact that most people (including me) start out with these heli's and basicly don't know anything about the mechanics of a heli. So that doesnt help either to get these things air worthy. No regrets though,,,,by the time you can hoover and fly these things you will be amazed at your own capabillity when you finally get to fly a "better" brand heli Just dont spend to much $$ on these things...like already said here..for that money you could get a better heli.
For me these heli's were part of the learning curve haha

hey Newbflyer101, the prices you mentioned, is that the cost for the kit with no electronics? i have read the post about the HBK2 regarding toolman's questions about quality and i see how saving some coin towards a larger bird is the way to go. If i get the blade 400 its about $369.00 depending where i get it and it comes with the dx6i TX but is this a good enough tx to use on larger more able Heli's. I hate buying things twice so id want to make sure i get something worthwhile the first time.

Don't try to upgrade it much just leave it stock. Get out of it as soon as you can afford a decent heli. Upgrade in this order.

Get a nice DX6i or DX7 if you plan to move to nitro w/3 x 285 servos.
Set that radio up for the 22e but save the 3 x 285 servos.
Save up for a GY401 + 9650, use that on the 22e for now.
Save up for a Trex 450 SE V2.

Tie a string from the Walkera 22e and hang it up in your kids room, he will love it.

gravesrc.com got the 130 bucks for trex450xl. no electronics. no motor , no esc. just the kit. i also started out with an esky. it was cheap so i just bought one to try out. i did learn how to hover in 2 days with it. piros, fff, fig 8 came not too long after. then i realized by that time how much i've spent trying to keep that thing flying. it would of cost way less to have a trex 450. but the thing is that the esky and walkera's come in RTF packages that get curious people like me hooked.

dont upgrade your walkera's or esky birds. use them to learn the basics and mechanics then ditch them. buy a good radio. as stated above dx7 rocks! i have the dx6i which will do for now till i get something really good like JR 9303. its often that people see the trex kit and want it but cant figure out how to build one properly and setup it for the first time. that's where walkera's and esky comes in.

Go copterx 450,$195 all metal,great second heli,uses trex 450 design at half the price,i had one before the trex 600,it went well.

Actually I gave my Walkera 36 to someone who had crashed his and couldn't afford to fix it last Christmas. It did fly well for what it was and I can't find myself hating any helicopter.
