anyone change from 420 to 440 motor?
I noticed the new 440 motor has a longer pinion gear than the stock, even though they are supposed to both be 11 teeth. Anyone else seen this?

that would be odd, considering they both use the same replacement pinion, BLH1610. And they're 10T.

That probably explains why you see a difference. The stock 450 comes with 10T, but the 440h motor does come shipped with 11T (it's marketed for Trex replacement, so maybe that's why). 11T should work fine. You'll have a higher head speed. If you have vibration issues then place 10T on it or limit your throttle curve.

Thanks..I will just stick with the 10 for now and see how it goes. I have the carbon fiber blades to go with it as well so should be safe rpm wise. Just got to figure out how to balance them and I am good to go till I do the head change. Thanks, Fletch

Look at the blade balancing video here. It works very well.

So does the 440 require the bearing mod also. Or is it more reliable than the 420

There is a good you tube video on how to do it. I am a much better flyer than a fixer and I was able to do it, though dealing with that tiny c clip was a pain. Make SURE you use a ziplock bag if you do the mod! Just letting my locktight dry overnight then I will put it back in the 3d tomorrow.

I think its ridiculous to pay $50 for a motor and the 1st one I got 48 hovers and 2 flights. The second one only lasted 40 flights. Do the math, 90 times 6 minutes comes out to about 9 hours of run time for 2 motors (4 1/2 each). I can pay $50 for a ceiling fan and run it for years.
Okay so the mod isnt hard but what kind of crappy engineering is this. Or you can pay $80 for a scorpian. I just pulled the trigger on a Align 450MX thats supposed to work here also. I will have to see what kind of life I get out of it. (plus $8 for the pinion)

A more knowledgeable member here told me to keep an eye on the bottom bearing for signs of heat discoloration. He is now using the 450 motor and seem to think that one is fixed and won't have the problem, fwiw. I don't think it is crappy engineering, I think it is QC as some are fine.

Hey guys,
Just my 2 cents , But i put the 440 in a month ago 6 flights in (just slow circuits) had a small crash. While replacing a few things thought i would check the bearings in the motor. to my amazement the bottom bearing was fine. To my surprise the top bearing was the one that needed the mod. So just a note make sure to check both.

I ran the 440 motor with the loctite remedy. I don't believe you should have to do anything like that to keep a motor running, but it beats shelling out the money for a new motor. Recently I purchased and installed the Scorpion 4400kv and am running it at 83% throttle and I love it. You can look at it and see the quality, no play or slop, plus its not as loud as the stock motors. ReadyHeli has the pinions you would need but I drilled out a Blade pinion and used it with no issues. You just have to grind down the point of the set screw so more threads grab the brass pinion and it doesn't strip out due to less wall thickness after drilling out. Learned that the hard way. But bite the bullet and get the Scorpion motor and you won't be disappointed, beats buying the Blade motors over and over.

I just did a test flight with stock blades ..I reduced TC to 60%. It flew fine but of course did not have much power. But I did notice the motor was rather warm afterwards. I don't remember my 450x being this warm but I could be mistaken.
Any concerns? Just glad I am making progress in the tech skills dept.

Re: anyone change from 420 to 440 motor?
My 420H lower bearing just bit the dust on my 450 after only 2 months and maybe 30-40 flights. I even did the loctite mod, but might either buy a new set of boca bearings or throw a Turnigy 3550kV motor in there with an 11t. That combo should give me what I need.
I am disappointed in these motors and an not even going to bother with a 440H when I put the FBL kit on it. |

I raised my TC to 70% tonight and it was better, still not powerful, but motor did not get as hot. Maybe because today was first time motor was run..who knows. Now just need a dowel or bolt so I can balance the CF and give them a try with higher TC's After that it will be time for the head kit and beastx. For me the beastx will probably be the hardest part which is ironic considering IT is my job

anyone change from 420 to 440 motor?

I'm not even sure the lower washer is usable right now so if I can't find a replacement i might not even bother with the Boca bearings considering a good set costs almost as much as a new eflite motor. |
