Default Be careful with PRC connectors on 12s setups!

Be careful with PRC connectors on 12s setups! I just learned the hard way that it is possible to plug two lipos together and short them out with a spectacular flash of flame.

Doing some setup and bench testing on my goblin 700 build. I accidentally plugged my two 6s 5000A lipos to each other instead of into the esc. There was a huge flash as they shorted out and my fingers were charred and in intense pain. Went to the ER and luckily it was not as bad as it looked. 2nd degree burns on 3 of my fingers of my left hand.

It's totally my fault this happened as i used the same color connectors for both the esc and flight packs, plus I was rushing to get the Goblin finished so I could maiden it tomorrow.

Ouch...that doesn't look fun. I shorted a pack the other day plugging pack into itself. I learned no one talks to me while doing so and I need to slow down...I was more lucky then you though. Sorry for painful lesson.

Holy shit! Glad you still have use of your hand! I have EC5's on all my big birds and I have the ESC wired up where you don't have to use a Y harness on my Goblin 700.

One trick is to put blue PRC connectors on your heli and red on the batteries. Then you are always connecting a blue to a red.

I just re-dressed the burn and overall it looks much better than last nite. Most of the char came off with the bandages. There is a spot on my index finger where I was holding the connector still has a bit of char to it though and still looks and feels pretty rough, plus some huge blisters on the other two fingers. . thanks everyone for your concern.

This is what I did to prevent that from ever happening.

What did they say at the ER when you told them you got that from a toy helicopter?

Those are called PRC connectors? I've only ever heard of them being called XT connectors and I've only ever seen them in red, not black.

Where can I get the black ones and do they make them in the 4mm version in that color?

Color coding is nice, but I wouldn't use a connector that had no male/female parts.
I stick to EC5 on all my birds.

Not as big of a problem on 550 and smaller which only use 6S. Only one connector on the battery and only one place to plug it into. I figure it's safer to leave the XT connectors on than it is to resolder the battery connectors because the chances of having an accident while resoldering a live battery (which always scares the crap out of me) is greater than the chances of plugging two batteries into each other.

I have to disagree.
Resolder carefully once, and connect battery to whatever you have to over and over again. Today its a 6s bird, the next is a 12s setup. Sounds a better practice to me.
