Working on helis inside is not the mistake here. So, you haven't addressed the issue by going outside.

A couple issues.
1. No heli should reach full speed in 2 secs and more like 8+ with soft start.
2. Throttle hold should always be on if not at the fight line and about to take off.
3. Depending on bench work being performed, motor should be disconnected

I've learned a few things here, thank you. I suppose its much more dangerous just getting into your car to get to the field, but wow, what an eye opener.

Wow, what a great thread!

Being a relative noob to the hobby of RC helicopters, I nonetheless have a background as a pilot and know that rotating blades will maim or worse, kill, depending on, of course, size and rotating speed. And a poke in the eye by a prop from something as small as a Proto X quad can, in the least, scratch a cornea.

While the largest bird I have right now is a fixed pitch MJX F45, I am always conscious of the rotating blades of all of my helis. . . . .

Thanks again for the info!

Bringing it in for a landing on a gusty day and lost control about 10 feet out. It went over my head and I ducked down at the last minute.

Flying around my living room and just got a little frisky with the sticks and dove my MCPXBL into my face. Thankfully it wasn't worse.

Might as well add my recent mishap to this thread also.

Yesterday, I got hit by my Blade 180 CFX. Lost orientation and panicked. Turn my back to it and flew it right into myself. Stupid and dangerous.

Thanks. I really did get lucky. Those small blades spinning at 4200 RPM can do some damage.

People have killed themselves when a 700 size hit them.

Super fast spool-ups have happened causing really nasty injuries:

1) You can have a normal / standard throttle curve starting at 0 with idle ups at flat 80's or 90's.

2) At the bench / field, wherever; with TH disengaged and collective stick at lowest position (0) the heli will not spool.

3) Accidentally flick / bump / miss-handle the IU switch and it WILL almost immediately spool up (from 0 to 80%) in a couple of seconds.

You could also have auto rotation bail-out on your ESC with flat-line governed throttle curves. Even with throttle hold on, if you forget to zero out the ESC; once you get out of throttle hold it WILL almost immediately spool-up to the last rpm range obtained before hitting TH.

In other words: no soft start in either case with very dangerous outcome.

It only takes 30 seconds to take the main blades off. Unless you are setting pitch or have the motor unplugged you should get in the habit of working on it without the blades on. If you set up a lot of governors you will get in the habit of keeping the blades off. Everyone of my helis will spool up as soon as turn off throttle hold. Super soft initial spool up however so you grab the blade and hit throttle hold. My normal idol up 1 and 2 are all the same with different head speeds.

Apparently no one injured themselves in 2015. That's either great news or time to bump this thread.

With registration now in place, 2016 won't have any injuries either! All our problems are solved! Thank god for the FAA!

Usually, transmitters failsafe is what ever all the switch positions are during bind. You must have binded w/ maximum throttle.

Please don't pollute this long running thread with FAA garbage. There are plenty of venues for that already.
