Default MA releases new clutch

Just seen this today;

MA131-11 Whiplash Nitro Sealed Clutch Bell Complete with Sprag

MA131-12 Whiplash Clutch Bell Brass Bushing

MA133-11 Whiplash Sealed Gas Clutch Bell Complete with Sprag.

Reason is: The clutch bell stays approximately 40 degrees cooler and less maintenance since the seal keeps the grease within the sprag.

Wonder if I need to get the clutch bell brass bearing along with the sealed clutch bell?

Lets see, one says Gas in the name and another one says Nitro in the name. That leaves one left for electric.

None of the above is for the electric, it is to be released at a later date.

I just built a Whiplash gasser, haven't flown it yet...so, do I need to swap out my clutch bell and sprag with MA?

There's two choices to do this bell upgrade:

You can purchase the complete Bell assembly w/Sprague bearing pre assembled.

This is a simple drop in replacement for the existing.

OR, you can purchase the Brass Bushing and the new clutch bell housing, and reuse the sprague out of your existing clutch bell.

You will need an Arbor press to press the brass bushing into the new bell if you choose the latter option. Obviously, you will want to make sure you have the sprague orientated correctly before you press the brass bushing in

What is the advantage of this upgrade? Thanks

The new bell retains grease in the sprague much better.

The brass bushing also acts as a support bearing for the pinion. My original OWB/pinion kept locking up, the new design fixed it.

My gasser clutch kept getting lube from the OWB running into the clutch bell causing the clutch to slip. There is a direct leak path from the starter shaft into the clutch bell. A very simple solution that seems to be working well is to to first install starter shaft with the pinion removed from the assembly. On the small end of the start shaft, install a small o-ring. Install the pinion over the starter shaft and into the sprague, this also pushes the o-ring into position to deflect the lube for contamination the clutch bell.
