Battery C Rating
I can get a 2200 mah 20C rated battery at a bigger discount than say a 25, 30C. Im just doing basic flying, no 3d stuff. Is the 20c plenty fine for this? Or should i go ahead and shell out now for a higher C rating as it would be better for my future needs in the long run?

20C is fine. That's a continuous 44A with that size battery.
If you're just doing basic FF and sport flying, 20C will do you good.

Depends on the battery, some "20C" packs will barely manage 10C actual discharge without wearing out fast.
Can you post the brand please?

While 20C packs will work "ok" 25-35C packs will be a lot happier. They will run cooler and more than likely last more cycles.

I always wondered about this. I think too many people think if 20C is good 40C is better but you just may not need that. I saw one post where a flyer measured the amp draw on his trex 500. He was using 3000mAH 6S 30C batteries which means he had 90 amps availabel. When hovering he was drawing less than 20 amps and when doing 3d he was up to 58 amps. He said he doesn't do any hard 3D which would be like most of us.
So if you use 6S 2650 mAH 20C battery you would only have 53 amps but this is continuous and you have something called peak discharged which would allow this battery to draw 30C for 10 seconds which is more than enough for a sport flyer. I am building a Trex 500 and looking at what would be a reasonable cost battery and just dropping from a 30C to a 20C does make a big difference in cost. I am stil a neubie and trying to learn so could be wrong but it wasn't too long ago people where using 20C batteries and doing hard 3D but with the cost dropping all the time they have gone to higher Discharge batteries for the same cost.

Going from a 20C to a 25-30C battery will make the battery run cooler through out the flight. And since heat is the number one killer of batteries that is a good thing. The less you demand from the battery the happier it will be.
That said, you don't need to go out and buy a battery with a 90+ C rating if you are just hovering. When I first got my 450 I was flying it with 20C packs mostly just doing circuits. They were a little warm after a flight but not too bad. After flying the 20C packs for a while I got some Gens Ace 25C packs and they ran much cooler and had noticeably more "pop" since there was less voltage sag.

I would say that most of the time 20C packs would be fine for any sport fliers.
There is a guy at our field that flies the hell out of a Trex700. As good as ANY professional you have seen and he runs 25C packs. They are pretty warm when done but has not affected his flying. The other thing that most don't know is the REAL C rating of their packs. We all know how these manufacturers lie about the C rating of thier packs. |
