Clutch
This has been my favorite part to clean up! It might have something to do with being able to chuck it up in my drill. It sure did go MUCH faster.

Everything looked good for sitting as long as it has. It had good compression and turned well. I have been trying to get a little done each week on some part of this thing. I have been working on the main blades and am running into problems. I could not peel off all of the old orange monokote off (any tips)? I really wanted to recover them in white but afraid the orange will show through if I cant get it all to come off. The upper and lower wood parts are on hold right now. There is just so much to do on this thing.

A heat gun or hair dryer should soften the adhesive enough to get it off. You may have some glue residue left on the wood that might require sanding, I would not use any liquid as this may affect the wood. Do not forget to seal any exposed areas after recovering.

"I have been working on the main blades and am running into problems. I could not peel off all of the old orange monokote off (any tips)?"
I agree that heat is probably the best way to try to get the covering off, although the covering is probably actually Monokote trim, which is self adhesive rather than having the heat activated adhesive that regular Monokote does. The original blade covering was probably Fascal. Vinyl shelf paper works great (that is what we used to pack into the GMP Cricket kits). The blades should be re-enforced where the bolts go through (we used to soak them in thin CA). Some people fiberglassed them. There is stress on them from flying, but adjusting the pitch, which uses wrenches or pliers to hold the see-saw and bend the metal strap blade grips can crack them very quickly. I am enjoying watching your progress, sir!

Thank you. That means a lot to me. I will post a pic of the blade in the morning.

I think this is fiberglass that has been glued in place.

I think someone was still making new blades for it until recently.
I just looked for Vintage Helicopter parts, but they seem to be gone now...

Landing Gear
Here is a unrestored/restored pic of the landing gear. I wanted a machined look for this part but was unhappy with everything I tried. In the end polished won out. So with that in mind I need to decide on what finish I want on the skid tubes. My original plan was machined on the bows and polished on the tubes. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I also want to thank everyone for all the interest in this thread. It's making this daunting task much more enjoyable

Exhaust
A before and after pic. It turned out OK I was really worried about damaging the finish with wet sanding. I think the chrome/gold look and shape of the exhaust is cool.

You do realize that your machine is going to look far better than when new, don't you?
Absolutely outstanding!

I thank you for the kind words I have had a "picture" in my head of what this will look like when its all done. To be honest, I'm missing the mark. The frame sides did not turn out even close to what I wanted. I might redo them. I can be a little on the OCD side so I have a hard time with "good enough". In the end I think I will be happy. I will be posting up a "special" pic this weekend.....stay tuned.

Main Blade
These blades were in very poor condition. They had chunks missing and cracks in several places. I did my best to repair/cover them for display use only. I would not trust flying these blades at any head speed. I used the trim sheet "sticky back" stuff and I think they came out ok for my skill set. I know they do look better than what I started with.

Special Picture
As promised my "special picture" for the build. There was NO WAY I would do this build without this guy. I had to purchase GI Joe, his jumpsuit, and headset all separate. It was more money than I wanted to spend but still money well spent.

Skid Tubes
After the last wet sanding (2000) they did not look right with the polished landing gear. I like the polished look much better. Putting the two together without scratching anything is going to be tricky. Since I still have the other landing bow to do they wont be going together today.
