Motor troubleshooting (clicking noise)
I have a MiniTitan that I crashed on Friday and am putting back together.
First the crash. Gust of wind, sihouetted from cloudy day = dirt nap. I hit TH before it hit, but... I accidentally un hit it while I was walking to the heli, so it chicken danced for a moment until I realized what I did. Main gear was stripped. I've mostly put it back together and when I meshed the main gear and the motor and spun it up by hand, I hear a clicking sound. So, to trouble shoot, I pulled the motor back from the main gear and did the following. - Checked the OWB for smoothness - Checked the main bearings for smoothness - Spun up the motor when it was disengaged. (No abnormal noise and seemed smooth) - Pulled the motor apart and checked the bearings. Seem alright. Everything seems alright. Should I just punt and replace all of those bearings? Thoughts?

Can you tell by the speed (frequency) of the clicking if the sound is in time (same speed) with the main shaft, the motor, or the tail rotor? That might help you narrow down where it's coming from.

Good tip. Not sure why I didn't think of it.
You know when you spin the motor by hand and it sort of ratchets as it moves by the magnets? That's when it clicks. Here's my theory... Maybe a magnet got a bit loose? Not enough to catch when spinning with no main gear attached, but enough to catch when the pressure of the main gear is there?

A disassembly of the motor should quickly reveal any obvious problems. Once apart, you can rotate the motor bearings by hand to try and detect any roughness.

I did find an old stock Ace motor that I mounted up and there is no noise when I use it, so it's definitely the motor.
Nothing obvious inside. No rubbing marks or visible loose magnets. I only had one of the bearings of the same size, so I'm going to order the bearing kit and hope for the best. Not sure why I keep putting money into an orphaned heli. I guess still cheaper than replacing it.
