Default Velcro

Should the hook side or the loop side be used on the battery tray, if it matters? Where's a good place to buy rolls of only one side?

Personal preference. 3m makes individual rolls. Your local Home Depot might have them.

I like the soft side (not the hook side) on lipos... reason being, the soft side picks up less crap, and it is more likely a lipo will be laid down somewhere where there is dried grass or something that might get stuck to the Velcro.

You can get Velcro a lot of places. I often purchase several feet on EBay. Not sure why you would want to purchase only one side, but I've never seen sold like that, but I really haven't looked.

You need one side for the battery tray and a lot more of the other side for all the batteries

I typically make the strip in the battery area (planes and helis) longer to enable more battery movement for CG adjustments. I've also used Velcro for temporary mounting of power strips and such on my work table. The bottom-line is, when I ran out of my first 3' strip of Velcro, I had maybe 6" left of whichever side was still left (don't remember which side was left). Simply, the fact I use the soft side for all my lipos, hasn't made a significant difference in the amount of hook side vs. soft side Velcro I use... I use them both about the same.

You can buy hook and loop fastener at most convenience places such as Walmart, KMart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, etc.

Most professional RC heli pilots have a strong preference for putting the fuzzy side on the battery. Note that you should always us a strap... the hook and loop fastener will only keep the battery from sliding around... the strap will keep it from flying off.

Thanks guys. I was thinking maybe hook was more durable than loop, and so would be a better choice for the battery tray, but they're both probably engineered to be about the same. Good point about loop picking up debris. I just drag a dental pick through it to get lint out. I finally went with hook for the battery tray. I think of the heli as more feminine than masculine, and I want it to have something soft.

Woops, I didn't see Steve's post until just now. I'll use the fuzzy side on the battery then.

Are the different kinds of Velcro fairly compatible with each other's hooks and loops, or should you try to stick with one brand/type?

I get my velcro, double sided tape even small zipties
at any of the 1,000's of 99c stores around here.

and since my cat loves to chew on cell phone charging cables
I even get those there for a buck each.
