Climber turned heli-pilot
Hi Everyone,
I am now about one month into the RC helicopter hobby and I have to say that I am loving it! I'm in my late 20's living in Madison, Wisconsin. I really enjoy just about every type of outdoor activity you can imagine. Canoeing, kayaking, cycling, backpacking, climbing, scuba, camping, hunting and fishing, you name it. I enjoy good craft beer and fine bourbons (Angel's Envy or Woodford Reserve anyone?) and work as a biology researcher. I've got a story to tell about how I found this hobby. For the last four years I have been a dedicated ametuer rock and ice climbing as well as mountaineering athlete and have been on numerous trips and expeditions around the world. Recently, while training, I injured my ankle quite badly and have been out of commission for the last few months. To make matters worse, an old fracture in my wrist that I got from a freeride mountain biking accident eight years ago has raised its ugly head, preventing me from doing much in the way of upper body training. These two medical issues have essentially prevented me from participating in the outdoor activities that I love and that have, to some extent, come to define me as a person. I was seriously depressed, until... A few months ago one of my fiance's nephews was playing with a little S107G coaxial at a family gathering. He let me try the thing and I was instantly hooked. I immediately bought one of my own. I mastered every aspect of its flight capabilities in couple of weeks. Then I bought a V911 Pro and mastered that in about three weeks culminating in controlled nose-in and tail-in hurricanes. Then I bought a 200 SRX and started getting pretty good with it until... the pirrouette of death. I suspect a bad ESC based on how hot it was. Horizon Hobby will hopefully ship me a new one. I picked up a Nano CPX and the new DX6 and love both! The Nano flies so smooth compared to the V911! I was hovering on my maiden flight, no problem. Now I want a CP that I can fly in the wind so I can spend time outside in my corner of the park soaking up the sweet summer sun with all the other people out there doing there thing! How far will I take this? I'm not sure but I plan to start trying flips with Nano tonight. Should be good fun! I look forward to getting to know some of you in the community and would like say thank you already all for the assistance and knowledge that you've all shared on these forums. They have been essential in helping me get this far. Cheers! |

Welcome
Welcome to the addiction er... I mean hobby. Sorry to hear that your injuries have caused you to have to take time off from the activities that you enjoy.
As for the hobby itself it can be quite fun but be prepared to crash a lot and repair a lot. If you have any friends that fly or there is a field where you can get to know some people it will help out when you get to the point where you want to build and fly some bigger helis. I don't really have anyone in my area that flies that can lend a hand so I mostly learn the hard way or by reading stuff here and then trying to figure it out. I think if I did have someone local that flew I would be months ahead of where I'm at now. Again, welcome to the hobby and be safe.
