Default What do you think?

You reckon this motor is smoked? Rubbings all around and filings on the magnet. When I first got the heli it wouldn't spool because the pinion wasn't contacting the main. I might have moved it a bit to close/tight?

All I can tell from the lowres pic is that one of your magnets has some wear on it. Can't derive much more than that. In order for the heli to spool your pinion has to be securely on the motor shaft with grub screw secured with loctite and the pinion needs to make contact with the main gear with about 1mm of play.

iPad 2, should have used the phone for a better pic. Pinion was good, I think I had it too tight. Of course, the small mishap might have contributed to its demise.

Can't tell from the photo as it is too blurry. Have you tried to run the motor? What happens if you put power to it without the gear/pinion connected?

Looks like an Eflite motor. They are notorious for wearing the motor shaft at the bearing causing play which will let the motor wobble and wear the magnets like that. Fusing the bearing to the motor shaft with loctite will prevent this.

Yay! And just ordered the rest of the parts off of eBay to complete the job.
Are they here yet?

Now that sounds like - well - not easy. That's a pretty small bearing, with some very small washers involved. Not to mention the surgical precision placement of loctite. Red or blue? Did you know red tastes better?

One thing I love about this site- there are absolutely no endless debates on which is the best oil to put in the crankcase. None!

I use red. It isn't hard to do and only takes a couple of minutes. I use a toothpick dipped in loctite to coat the inside of the bearing and then carefully slide the shaft through the bearing. It doesn't take much loctite at all. I have done it several times and never harmed a bearing. I have also had failures such as yours when I didn't do this mod. Make sure to give the loctite 24 hours to dry before flying.

The motor chugs and grinds and the casing wobbles a bit. It has boogered the main gear very slightly in spots. Have a new one of those, with bearing and one way, feathering shaft and main shaft. Also replacing the esc with an Align 35a. New blades, too. All because I overlooked preflighting the training wheels! One of the rods popped out of the center when it came down it it tipped over.

Thank you! I think I'll practice on the smoked one first.

BTW, that is probably the smallest c-clip I've ever dealt with on the shaft of that motor. And it is long gone. Popped off and disappeared into the ether. I have tons of them, but not in that size. Do you have any tips on removing and installing it? Dental pick popped it off, and I mean pop!

The magnet from a used mCP X tail motor. They are tiny but ungodly strong and I put them on the ends of my tools to catch falling parts and hold the screws of what ever assembly I'm working on.

For C clips and motors, working on the motor in a ziplock bag could also help.

+1
Typical blade 400 failure point.

Put the motor, clip, and tools in a plastic bag and work inside of the bag. If you post a pic of the motor shaft we could tell you if thats what happened.
