Default 6S Setups (Sticky)

Okay all, having raised the issue of a sub-forum I have been asked to raise a thread that will become a sticky. If/when Align produce an official 6s kit, then a sub-forum might be created. Before you all yell out saying that there is already a 6S thread, I know but given that it is already 90 pages long, I thought a fresh start would be good.

So, to start off, it would be really good to get some consolidated 6Ss setups and I am sure questions will soon raise their heads. Any info on batteries being used will also be most useful as is this potentially the greatest area of uncertainty.

Kicking off then, I am in the process of building a 6S setup using:

Ice Lite 50 ESC
Scorpion 2221-2010 v2 motor
13T pinion
Voltz 1300mAh 6S batteries

Thanks everyone!

Just finished putting together a Pro V2 for 6s

Scorpion 2221-2010
Ice Lite 50
12tpinion
Geforce 3s 30c 1300's x2
CGY750

Didn't get to many flights on it yet,one of the 410m's that came with kit was not acting right so waiting on a replacement.

My two setups are nearly identical. One is a 6s scorp 2221-2010, Voltz 1300ma 35c batt, Ice 50, and a Skookum 720 fbl setup with Radix head swinging Radix 350s.

My other 6s build is a custom GoBrushless wound Scorp 2221-2010, Ice 50, 2000ma nano 6s 45c batts, Hk Rjx clone head, Radix 350s, being ran by a Skookum-720 fbl setup. But in this case I custom cut a carbonfibre body and used the Eflite 3 bearing main setup with microheli delrin gears for superior strength for hardcore 3d. Both helis are running the 480 boom stretch with custom built tails. I used the 12mm rod from HK for the booms due to the high boom strength. On the Gobrushless build I had to 3 bearing main the build since the motor produces so much torque. I can pump shred cnc cut delrin gears at will. On the first build in the trex I ran 12 and 13 tooth hardened pinions. My pinion in this second build is a 10 tooth with a 144 main gear.
Both helis are using MKS Ds95 cyclics, one used the 95i on the tail and the other the outrage version.

I also have a scale Md500 that has a 6s setup but it is in rebuild mode. I was using the Gy611 gyro, flymentor, Scorp 2221-2010, Ice 50, Trex V2 body, Boom stretch, Cnc heli 3 bladed tail, Hk 450 pro head and custom built tail with some of the above features also. Great little heli. I did notice that my esc and motor came down hot with this setup due to the smaller airflow over the electronics. So I top mounted the Ice50 esc where the batt normally sits and bottom mounted the battery on the forward lower body extension.

So far the Voltz 1300ma batts work well due to the lower amperage draw of the 6s. Each of those batts have been seriously abused. I have documented 15 minute flights out of them when brand new without hitting the 3.2v cutoff. But I usually ground the heli at 8 minutes with 3.4v set for my soft cutoff and have hundreds of flights on each of them with modest cell degradation. My gobrushless version comes down with the motor and esc barely warm to the touch. I am building a set of 2000 and 2600ma 45c batts out of the much lighter 3s nano batts from HK. The 2000ma batts weigh in at 184 grams and the 2600s weigh in at roughly 230. These should give some superior flight times while also retaining the same weight as the Voltz 1300ma 6s batts. I will let everyone know how they hold up.

I am actually looking forward to the new Trex version. From all accounts there are guys using these already and I am very interested in the outcome.

I just moved my 450 Pro v1 from 2221-8 on 3S to 6S:

Align 450mx 1700kv with V2 motor mount
14T pinion
Hobbywing Platinum Pro 40A ESC
Edge 325 main / KBDD tail
Hyperion EX G3 45C 1100 mah batteries

AUW 939g

I'm still breaking in the setup, but these batteries give me about a 6 minute hover at full throttle, putting 800 mah back in during charge. Canopy fit is very tight, but no modification is necessary.

Mine is 8S, does that count... héhéhé..!!

Hyperion/scorpion 2221-1630kv
Now on 12T pinion
Castle ICE 50 ESC (heatsink)
2X 1300mah nanotech 45c -90c burst
Microbeast
Spektrum H3000 cyclic servo
Hitec 5084 MG tail

2 Lipo pack weight toghether 300 gram, it's a heavy set-up with the weight of the ICE 50 ESC.

Luvmyhelis, I'm interested to know how you can built your lightweight pack, mine are too heavy.

I modified the front frame to put my pack ala T-rex 600, CG is perfect like this and I can use A small canopy.

Here is some pic.

That's insane! So is there any noticeable difference between the 8s and 6s setup. It strikes me that in terms of weight and performance the 6s might be the option given the blades can only do so much?

Default My 6S Experience

Ok this is my first EVER post on this forum so here goes...

I am not a "3D" flyer but I do alot of inverted work, flips, rolls punchout etc...

My setup is FBL running a 1630KV Scorpion, 15T pinion and 35-50C 1300mah batteries. The system includes an Ice-50 Lite, Beastx, Spectrum satellite receiver, Hitec 5065 digital servos on cyclic, Futaba 9257 on the tail and no external BEC. I've got several hundred flights on this setup.

Only 1 mod..... I cut the frame where the stock battery tray used to mount and lowered it to be parallel with the slot beneath it and installed an aftermarket aluminum tray. This lowers the battery such that the stock canopy clears the battery with no problem.

The satellite receiver is mounted on the stock swash anti-rotation bracket (where most people usually mount the Beastx). The Beastx is mounted to the side of the airframe near the rear and in line with the main gear so that I can access the screws to easily remove the rear torque box. The Ice 50 is mounted inside the frame behind the motor.

The real reason for going 6S is efficiency, not speed or power. My setup runs cool and strong for the entire flight, with no real heat in the battery or motor. The heat in Texas is 95 -105 right now and I switched over from 3S to save batteries and motors. Another advantage is the excellent gear mesh achieved with a 15T pinion (low noise, no stripping).

I run the ESC in governor mode with idle 1 @ 2750rpm and get 8:30min. Idle 2 @ 3300rpm and get over 6:30min with only 850 -900 mah/batt going back in on recharge. You can barely hear the heli at 2750 rpm, no real gear noise because of the 15T pinion.

Everyone should change to 6S. It's not just for the 3D, high headspeed flyers.

It's for you too.

Actually for the pure performance with my heavy 8S, looking at my heli flying if I try to do some 3D, it's not very impressive, it's slow, I can really feel the extra weight in flight, but what impress me is it's unbugable, witch give a little more punch at full pitch, overall, I like it much more than my previous 4S set-up, it's much more efficient, no possible comparison.

Now that the lipo have some cycle on it, I tested it at 1800-1900rpm and I can fly around for 10+ minutes doing slow flip, roll, small loop, etc.... and everything came down cool, at 3.6 to 3.8V/cell no load, then when I'm hard on the stick at 3300+rpm, it's in the 7 minutes range.

I also noticed the voltage drop during hard load is much less than with my previous 4S.

Note: I use an Hitec aurora9, so I can monitor my pack voltage during flight and set the voltage alarm at 3.6V/cell (28.8volt).

Well said Roadracerr. My flying style is similar to yours. What's amazing is the difference in power and speed, especially with a good governor. My 6S setup has the same weight, headspeed and pitch range as my 3S, yet the performance difference is night and day.

Default Canopies

So what is everyone doing ref the canopy as my 6s battery doesn't really fit under the stock canopy?

I performed minor frame surgery at the start of my build and the stock canopy fits the Voltz 6S 1300mAh packs and the 2 x 3S Hyperion 1100mAh packs perfectly (actually there's a little room to spare).

The best illustrative photos I found were on rcrunryder

http://rc.runryder.com/helicopter/t581798p1/

I was a little hesitant hacking into a new kit and initially concerned that it might weaken the frame structure. No one I asked had any horror stories to report and I recently had a pretty bad crash about 40 flights in with no frame damage.

Congrats on the successful maiden flight. "Wow" really is the best way to sum it up

I've managed to put in another 40 flights on mine in the past 4 days after work for a total of about 80 flights.

Motor (scorpion 2010) and batteries (Voltz 1300mAh 35C) still holding strong.

Hi, decided to put my 450 on diet to make it as light as possible, I reduced the cell count from 8S to 6S, then next, I wonder if the external bec is really necessary, I actually have castle 10 amp bec.

Is anyone other than Roadracerr use the internal bec of the CC ice ESC without problem on a 450 6S set-up?

I am but am only a few flights into using it in the 6S guise. Working fine so far however.
