This is the best way to set up any gyro - get the mechanics set up so the heli holds in a hover in rate mode. This means the centered pitch of the tail rotor is just right to counter hovering torque without any corrections from the gyro. This way you minimize the amount of work the gyro and servo have to do.

put it on a lazy suzan to set up the tail... that's a lot easier than having to hover the heli every time u need to make an adjustment

Set the tail rotor pitch to about 5 degrees tail-left.
Lift to a hover and trim out any drift (in rate mode).
Land and adjust the tail pushrod length until the trimmed rotor pitch is set with servo centered.
