My point was, why would "the right people" go look at this petition at all, especially while it is still in progress? And once it is complete, is it "delivered" to "the right people"? These are genuine questions. I am not trying to naysay. I guess the part I don't understand is how/when/what gives this thing, or any of it's comments, exposure to the people you want to have see it? Also, you mentioned not being able to have the original petition post modified. I don't know what the policy is of the site that this is on, but it doesn't make any sense to allow the original post to be modified or edited. If that was the case, I could make a petition that says "Sign this if you think the FAA is out of line" and then after 10,000 people sign it, I could change it to say "Sign this if you think the FAA is well within it's rights and all of the people on HeliFreak are cry babies". Then I would have your signature on something that you completely disagree with.

From what I understand, it's up to the creator of the petition and individuals themselves to get the petition noticed by policy makers and others who can effect change. Change.org can be used for many purposes, so I don't think there's a standard way in which a particular petition gets noticed. It has been used to get companies to change business practices, as well as to get congress to change laws and policies. You do raise a good point. Change.org is at it's core a central location for people to collect signatures and voice their opinion. So a good idea would certainly be for us to send a link to this petition to our local policy makers, and make them aware of it. I'm sure policy makers do take a look at the petitions on Change.org, as it's a pretty well known site. But given the nature of our hobby, I doubt if this petition would be noticed if we didn't make the effort to make it known. So certainly we should be informing our local policy makers of this petition. I'm not sure what the process is for changing the contents of the petition either. The person who created the petition should be posting in this thread shortly from what I understand, so he should be able to give us some insight on that. |

Ok guys, so I'm the person who made the petition. I can edit all aspects of it, "the decision maker", the title, and description. No worries there.
I've recently got a PM from the OP of this thread that I should add/change some of the petition's main section. I've taken a look at Steve Graham's post/comment, and I think it would certainly work well in the petition. I've copied the comment into a Google Document. It's free edit so anyone can edit it. You should not need an account to do so. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...it?usp=sharing Although as far as I can tell it's pretty much ready to go, if you think it maybe could use any changes, or if there's anything you think could be added, please feel free to edit the document. I intend to copy it into the change.org description when we feel it's ready. I also need help finding a better title (the one I have on it now is, meh) and possibly the picture if you think it's necessary.

Also KX to answer some of your questions, this is what Change.org told me as I created it (and I can edit it whenever I want to)

Can anyone confirm the document is editable? It should be but I haven't done free edit before.

It is absolutely shocking to me that the text can be edited for the reasons I previously stated. IMO, that would (and in my mind does) remove all credibility of the site. Sorry, JMO.

As far as the title and the main contents. I would remove and keep any reference to the word drone out of it. Drone is already a negative word and has a negative association with the general public and most likely policy makers as well. The FAA is quite obviously using this to their advantage. We don't want that negative association in the petition. It's better to refer to it as model aircraft, multi-rotor aircraft, etc.

I made some minor edits to the document.
Most notably: Added definitions to all the acronyms for clarity. Modified parts that referred to Steve, as I'm not sure he wants himself to be made that public with this. I removed the bit about being a commercial pilot, and the bits that spoke from the perspective of a commercial pilot. I also changed all instances of 'I' to 'We' because I feel it's better to speak from the perspective of a community rather than the perspective of one person. Sounds more solid to me, at least. It doesn't seem like anyone else is too interested in modifying things any further, and I don't have any more ideas. I feel most everything is covered in this piece. Does anyone else have any ideas? I can write and research fairly well if anyone thinks there are other points that should be brought up. I transcribe audio to text and review transcriptions that have been done by other people for part of my income, so I have a good background in writing to some extent. |

Liked. (#12)
Edited the Google doc. I'm thinking that we should remove the section about commercial sUAS. That isn't part of our fight. The focus of the text wavers a bit. Each bit of it needs to be about sUAS reg. ... working on it... NTSB says that "Unmanned Aircraft Accident" excludes model aircraft http://www.ntsb.gov/news/press-relea...R20150911.aspx so... the NTSB section seems moot. I hacked it up a bit. If you (all) like it... good, if you don't please change it back. This is just my 0.02.

There's a revision history that can be viewed, so anything that was removed can still be viewed in the revision history if someone feels it should be included. There's also a suggestion mode that can be selected on the top right where it says, "editing." |
