Default Pinion Problem

Using a 14t pinion on 3S/325, never been flown. Finally got school bills paid and got the skookum, tried to test it today.

Motor spins, blades don't.

Took it home, took it apart. Did I put the pinion on upside down like an idiot? Doesn't appear so. Put it back on, spin the can by hand, blades spin. Re-tension belt, re-loctite bolts, take it back out.

Motor spins, blades don't.

I'm kind of at a loss. Haven't yet had a look to be certain that the pinion isn't moving. But there is no resistance, vibration, noise or anything else. Just sounds like an unloaded motor running freely.

This is my first full-size heli so no mistake is too stupid for me. Just putting two bearings on the pinion, putting it on the shaft, putting on the washer and bolting everything up. What else could there be?

Is you motor runnig the wrong direction? Sure sounds like it is with what you are describing. If it is just swap any 2 wires from esc to motor unless you have ice esc then you can reverse it in the esc software.

Son of a $&@&!

I'll test it tomorrow, Thanks.

Sure sounds like that or pinion spinning in the wrong direction. I know the 14T one can be pretty confusing as it doesn't have that ridge on the upper end as the others have.

Rob, check your pinion VERY often. The 14T is known to crack and 3 of the 3 i tested had cracked in under 5 flights One of them old and the other two new design.

Can't be pinion spinning in wrong direction as he rotated the motor can by hand and the blades spin in correct direction. Ya he probably should go to a 15 tooth and not risk the 14. Isn;t there supposed to be an improved 14 coming ?

Thanks guys, almost certainly motor wires. Didn't even think to check, excited to get it flying....

I'd read that more than once about 14t pinion, I expect just hovering, pulling vibe logs for the time being, hopefully not too stressful on it.

I've got an RPM sensor and going to try and govern on a finer pinion in the future.

Ah, right, I overlooked that.

One old pinion and two "new" ones broke, then I gave up and went 15T even though I had to govern the stock motor to 51% on the ESC before my 2010kV came in.

Rob, one of mine broke during initial setup, hovering and slow figure 8's only, so be careful

What is the advantage of going 14t or 15t rather than stock 16t? Running 3s with 325mm. TP 2250 battery, and Hyperion 2600.

lower head speed and I also find on my 3s setup the motor bogs less.

Okay. Bogs less on hard positive/negative pitch? Is that what you mean?

... no advantage imho...

but if you like to run the stockmotor (even the 2010kv-motor) on 4s, you better have to reduce the gearratio... macem

I ran my stock motor on 4S and would not recommend it. The motor runs on its voltage limit and heats up a lot. Any efficiency you have left goes poof instantantly and batts don't like it too.
2010kV motor on 15T works great, but that's a different story.
