Default What ESC for the 4530 540 LE and VBar Gov ?

Any suggestions for a good ESC to be used on this beast in conjunction with the VBar governor ?
I just hold of one of these for a Goblin build I am going to do later this year...

I'd wait for the Kosmik 200 HV. I don't think I would trust anything else with a motor that can draw that much current.

It will be interesting to see how long you can get TP 65C batteries or some of the other 60C batteries to last with that set up.

YGE can make you a 320A HV ESC if you ask them (basically a 160 with an extra board of FETs) that will work nicely with the VBar and will definitely handle the current.

A 160A YGE may also work, ill let others pitch in here.

Don't shoot me, but I'm running a Castle 120HV 4.01 beta fw, HW RPM sensor, 4530-500 Quantum on my Goblin. It's working flawlessly. Same performance as my Scorp V.

An Ice 160HV is not out of the equation.

OTS, are you using the Vbar governor or the CC gov.? I'm running an ICE2 80HV on my 600Pro after I tacoed my HW and use the 4.0.1 firmware. Its decent, but definitely feel the difference from the vbar gov. For example, during hard pitch maneuvers, the tail was absolutely locked in and I would see it flinch no more than a couple of inches. Now with the same exact vbar settings, but Castle governor, I can get the tail to move a good foot with a hard pitch reversal. In any case, if you're using the vbar gov. and CC ESC, please post your settings if you don't mind and I'd like to give it a try.

The 4530 Quantum is more comprable to a 4525 scorp, a bit weaker actually.

the 4530LE is a step up in power despite the similar dimensions as it has much more copper in it.

Thanks for the replies so far, keep em coming..
I used to run the old Ice 120HV and 4525 520 LE on my Trex 700E and regularly pulled as much as 220 Amps for a second or two and the ESC never flinched, that was using the CC int. gov, I have read a few guys using there CC ESCs with the VBar gov on the older firmware, 3.27 and they all say they are quite happy with it, the CC reps have told me their ESCs will handle peaks of double their ratings and that has proven to be true in my case above.
I am definitely not spending 800 bucks on an ESC though that is for sure, it would be nice to hear from someone using a cheaper ESC on the 4530 with the VBar gov.
I am sort of leaning towards either an Ice 2 160HV or another V130HV Scorpion.
Has anyone tried the V130HV on a 4530 ?

Have CC got the external governor working? AFAIK their ESCs perform very poorly on the VBar gov?

External gov works perfectly on 4.01 Castle firmware with a digital RPM sensor such as the Hobbywing. 4.xx introduced fast throttle response which is why 3.xx performed so poorly.

Castle will be releasing updated firmware that improves the soft start, but with 4.01 I actually find it pretty good with a very minimal kick.

So bottom line if you can get a Hobbywing sensor, you can get top their vBar gov performance with a Castle ESC now.

I swapped out a Scorp V 130HV for my Castle 120 HV on the same setup and found the achievable governor gain and overall performance to be identical. But I get the benefit of full logging.

BTW, I'm extremely picky. I tried the 3.xx firmware with vBar gov and it was horrible. Major surging and tail artifacts. 4.01 is the real deal with vBar gov.

I use Fusion Hawk 120HV for this exact setup and it works perfectly (with hyperion sensor). No nonsense setup and ESC stays cool.

I'd never put a Castle HV ESC on any of my helis.

Sorry if I sound a bit thick, but when you say this exact set up, you mean the motor too? You are using 4530 540 LE ? What batteries, HS and pitch ? Are you hard on it ?

Yes, 4530-540LE, vbar governor, I am not very hard on it although I do speed runs at full throttle, I fly different headspeed ranging from 1450 to 1900 on my TDR. 30-40C batteries if that means anything. It has been flown quite hard by my friends.

The ESC is very simple but very well made and it works really well with VBar gov.

Timo Wetland used to use the same setup but with 4525 motor before he got sponsored by Kontronik.

TBH if you want ESC which will by factory specs operate within limits of this motor you need to look at least at YGE160HV or better at upcoming Kontronik Kosmik 200. Otherwise, I'd downgrade motor or trust that Jive 120/Scorpion/fusion Hawk can withstand 220 amp spikes from time to time (general consensus based on experience is that they can)

TBH, I'd not run this setup (any non castle ESC rated for less than 160amps + 4530-540LE motor) on a machine which requires high headspeed in range of 2000-2200. You are almost guaranteed to have thermal shut-downs or fires if you fly it hard, you can be sure that most lipo brand to be eaten alive in 30-50 cycles max as well. The motor is extremely powerful and when geared right pretty much unboggable and if I ever decide to get a Goblin I'll put this motor in in, along wiht Kosmik 200 and 65C TP packs.

Thanks AcidDrink, I think I am going to give the Castle 160HV a try, at least the loggs give me an idea of what is going on and take it from there, when I was running the 4525 520LE in my Trex 700E I saw a peak of 220amps on an old ICE 120HV and the ESC did not break a sweat...

Let us know how it goes. I totally lost my trust in CC ESCs, but I still can be convinced .
