Differences between all the TREX 550 kits?
I am thinking about building a TREX 550 FBL heli. But I am really confused about all the different versions of the kits that are out there - ESP, EFL, Pro, Combo, etc.
Can someone point out the differences between all the kits that are available from Align for their 550 class helis? I'm thinking about using the AR7200BX in the system. Thanks!

As far as I know there are only two 550 kits available from Align. That is the FBL kit and the FB kit. There is no ESP, EFL or pro kits in the 550. The only thing you want to make sure is that you get the V2 kit.

According to Align's site they only have these two kits. Its possible that vendors are selling older kits?

I'd love to build a kit using the AR7200BX, not the 3GX. I guess I could do it and then sell the 3GX unit.

Yeah I dont blame you there. You can always get the kit of Ebay with no electronics and then buy whatever you want to run, I do that all the time.

Any suggestions on who to buy it from? I hate eBay for that reason; don't know who you are buying the kit from. I don't want to get stuck.

There are a couple guys in NY that are great...but then you have to pay tax. I used to have a couple others guys, one in Utah and the other in Ohio but I haven't been able to get a hold of them lately.

This my understanding of the different 550 kits.
FBL & FB V1 , V2, and V2.1 Some sites sell the V2 at the same price as the V2.1 (KX021008AT) , so make sure you're comparing apples with apples. The Align servos are good, so for me I'd go with the combo deals and sell off the ESC and FBL controller. The 3GX FBL controller with the V2.1 firmware works really well, so you might want to consider giving it a try first.

Cool! Regarding the designation of the kit V2.1; does that have to do with the firmware of the 3GX FBL controller or are there some changes to the kit as well? How do you like your T-Rex 550 V2.1 - CC100 - BEC Pro - AR7200BX with the TM1000? Sounds awesome! The AR7200BX seems very straight forward to program. No? I'll bet the programming for all those options in the AR7200BX will be in the TX one day soon.

As far as Im aware, and I have one, the V2.1 has Helical (slant) main gear, pinion and DFC blade grips which means you only have to buy the DFC head upgrade kit and not grips also.

Direct Flight Control - thanks to poster- http://www.piroflip.net/trex-550e-v2-dfc-head-upgrade/
Lowers the CoG, see pics, and is supposed to improve performance accordingly. I've done it on mine and even though i'm not good enough to notice performance increase, it certainly looks far better |

I bought mine here:
www.performanceplusrc.com He has an option where they take out the 3GX for a $70 credit. Really good price as well. The 3GX's go for around $100 on the for sale section but this saves you the hassle. If noone else answered, the 3G was the older version of the FBL controller. The current version is 3GX. New kits should have the 3GX. Like you, I am using the AR7200BX.

Yeah, that's the route I'm going to go when I build my 550E V2. I want to go with the AR7200BX. Looks like it's so simple to configure. I also want to choose my own servos, ESC, etc... Anyone have any suggestions for servos?

Why do you believe that the stock kit is inadequate for you? - I'd understand if you were a pro 3D pilot.

I've had no issues with my 3GX, not that i've used another unit so can't comment on those. What I can say is that its certainly not as complicated as most make out, even for a reletive noob like me it was 10mins from woe to go
However, for my next build, hopefully the Trex700DFC, I would like to try another system i'm leaning towards V-Bar or Skookum. |
