Default Adequate 520mm size heli cyclic servos?

So what is minimal, adequate and over kill? There are so many choices of servos and I am not sure what to get.

Helike will be swinging 520mm blades and I would like something that I can grow with as I abuse the heli more and more.

Is 160- 190 in/ounces and .11-.09 enough?

Is 300+ Oz and .05 a waste of money and current?

BTW I am dead set on Futaba HV servos.

Thanks.

Mike

Default Adequate 520mm size heli cyclic servos?

I don't know what you mean by 520mm cyclics. My DT520 uses full sized servos. Are we talking about mini servos here?

I ground hogged my x5 couple of seasons ago... I was using align ds615 and ds655 on the tail... now this was a couple of seasons ago... at the time I kept browning out with HV servos if I was using a bec... so that's why I ended up with those... they worked awesome on my X5... more than enough.. so You gotta see what your electrical set-up will be... and by all means do the brown-out test ......... and you can't beat the price on them...

FWIW, I'm running $46 Kingmax HV coreless cyclic servos on my DT520. They've performed excellently for me. I have them on my DT700 as well. Both helis are flying RJX FS0521THV tail servos, which are wickedly fast.

I think he means, that he is going to fly his helicopter with 520mm main blades, and he wants to know what kind of servos can handle the blades 520mm without kill them and obtain the best performance possible on it, but he wasn't specific of what kind of helicopter he has, and if it will be mini servos or full size

sorry guys. Full size servos. Will be going in my gaui x5 with 520 blades. The reason I left out the heli was fear of this thread would quickly be moved to the x5 section - only one or two posts a day down there. Also might put them in a goblin down the road so "general 500-sized" seemed like a good idea.

I am trying to avoid putting an overkill servo in them, yet making sure to realize the full potential of the Helis.

I imagine at some point one would reach a point of diminishing returns, i.e., 400 oz. and 0.04 seconds. I want to beat this heli up a bit.

Honestly, the KST or Hobby king equivalents are pretty darn hard to beat these days. As a comparison, I've run just about every servo in the micro category and I have yet to kill one of the 306Gs which is basically a knock-off or very similar to the KST at nearly half the price. If you want cheap but don't want to miss performance then I'd say research the full size variants of the 306G.

That being said, if you look in the for sale section or on Facebook there are tons of servos being sold and at pretty abysmal prices (for the sellers). You can definitely find a full cyclic and tail set for under $200 in most cases and they're usually premium brand sets. Makes me wonder if anybody really buys retail anymore. I've tried practically giving away sets of my high-end servos without a single offer.

You don't need much on the x5. I ran $20 dollar hyperion high voltage servos. They were amazing.

I would advise you rather than looking for the fastest, strongest servos, on the x5. Consider getting servos that are lighter. I think the futaba 251 or 451 will have more than enough specs and a good compromise on the weight. The hyperions I ran were carbon gears, so they were super light. I now put on RJX servos that are metal. Great specs, but in flight they feel the same on this bird, but i can feel the weight difference.

I am using Savox SC-1258TGs on my 550U beater. Does the job at a reasonable 59 bucks apiece. I am using the internal BEC on a HW100A V3 ESC... No problems at all. The servos are tough... I already have one crash resulting in two servo horns breaking but the servo gears were unscathed.

The servos are relatively light too at around 60 grams apiece as the ends are plastic... The middle portion is aluminum.

+1 The turnigy rebranded kst servos are 39 dollars each. They are HV and pretty much unbeatable in the value department.

Well you are right it is a bit daunting. The problem is that everyone has the their favorite and every servo has horror story posts. Rather than suggest anything specific, I am going to suggest a methos to at least help you find servos in the right speed and torque range.

Pick a kit size and look at the Align version. Look at the servos they bundle with the kit and look up their specs. Now you have at least a solid reference point.

Then you have to decide if you want HV or 6V and/or motor type (brushless, coreless, etc). Willing to try something like Turnigy or name brands like MKS?

Once you know the specs you want and make your category choices, the field narrows down quite a bit. I'll tell you that I have spent many hours staring at servos specs and comparing various models and brands.

I just looked on Align's website..... they called out BL815H on their 550... that's the same one they use on their 800 kit... if you look at their 600... It list's DS615 series...so go with these specs minimum.... so sounds like the turnigys are worth a look... but they're all on back-order...

For the X5, get at least 100-120 oz for 3D setup, as fast as you can afford.
Killed the Hyperion DS servos in my X5 after a few years and just dropped in economy BKS....work real well.
300 oz wont hurt but not needed (could save them for the X7!)....get a good quality brand with high speed and the power will come in the package.
This is one of the most influential components determining how your heli flys....don't cheap out.
Best FBL out there wont do a thing for crap servos!

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the goblin 500 uses minis, so you won't be able to swap them over from your x5 in the future.

The Goblin 500 has provisions to use either minis or full size since it can stretch to 570s if I'm not mistaken? They use either a 34mm or 36mm bracket.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I thought that the bk minis were actually developed specifically with the goblin 500 in mind because they wanted to squeeze the power of a full size servo into a mini.

Super cheap servos from hobbyking, they're nice, I run them in my max. I have about 15 flights so far.

right, that's the idea. The 600 kit is older. I don't think they have a 600L Dominator yet. If the BL815H works on an 800, it is obviously plenty strong for a 550. I have the 700L with the BL815 and equivalent tail servo. I think they are super nice. Extremely quiet. With my BD3X controllers there is no buzzing or chattering like with other servos. So quiet I thought they weren't working when I first hooked them up. I've seen thread about problems with them but mine are fine. Not in the budget price category though. The DS615 and DS655 are pretty reasonable though.
