Could someone tell me if it's possible to make a clutch for electric motors? I'm only interested as I want the blades to startup like a real heli (for scale)

I accomplish the same effect by adjusting the Initial spool-up rate to 1 and the head speed change rate to 1 on my ICE2HV80 settings.

It all depends on what mechanics you have. Some will be able to fit a clutch some won't. For example a 700E with the way the packs and engine are located will not have space for a clutch but the 700 nitro will. What mechanics are you going to use?

I too wanted "scale blade startup" AND "turbine sound" for my 600 size
"Bell" Huey UH-1B.
So I chose to go with the "Align"Trex 600ESP for my mechanics.
The stock "Align" RCE-BL-100G ESC allowed a choice of 3 possible "throttle response" settings. (standard(slow), medium, or quick). By selecting the standard (slow) setting
and setting my throttle curve appropriately. I was able to achieve the desired blade and sound effects. The stock "Align" RCM-BL600M (1220KV) motor sure sounds good, like a turbine", as the throttle is applied and the blades slowly startup. I'm quite pleased.

With the way the 550 is designed, I think it would take a lot of modification to fit a clutch. It would be easier to use the slow spool up settings on your ESC. It won't be as impressive but will still look real.
If you had chosen a 600/700 nitro it could be done relatively easily as there is already the space for the clutch and kits available for the conversion. As Jose stated earlier, if you set your castle to 1 for slow spool up and 1 for head speed change gives very good results. Also use the governor so you are flying off pitch, this way the flight performance will be smoother and it will have a consistent rpm like the full size.

IMO with clutch is the best way to go on scale helis.
so far all my scale helicopters use the clutch and it gives a great scale-like spool up.
I use prop adaptors to mount on the motor and the clutch assembly goes onto the adaptor just like it would on a nitro motor.
I get my prop adaptors from GMP and MPI depending on the motor shaft size.
here is a short video of a spool up with my latest conversion; a Century predator. you can see the motor spools up but the blades are not moving at all.
