Finally got around to tearing down my 37 that failed a while back. Looks like part of the pin retainer broke off? Is this common?

This is odd. I changed both bearings about 2 months ago and all are good since. Perhaps you bought bad engine in first instance, the one made on Friday afternoon.

Glad it's not me.. I wonder if the retainer was damaged during installation? The engine only had about 2 gallons through it.

The retainer might simply not have been fully seated into the groove.

The retainer is still in the grove. The part that turns in broke off. You can see if you look close at the pics above. Should look something like this...
