I had a 'EPIPHANY' - Trex 500 first impressions
Ok, I'm a nitro kinda guy ya know. I like the smell, the tinkering with the engine, the tuning, the whole 9 yards about it.
I built the Trex 500 expecting it to be a neat small heli and be 'convenient' to fly. You know, in smaller places or if nitro would be too loud to fly etc. After gentle 3 minute flights yesterday to break in the packs and make sure nothing would explode I planned on the same scenario tonight. To take it easy, fly mellow, break in packs etc... Basically I said screw it and could not stand it any more. I had to see what the hype was all about. So.... 100% flat throttle curve it went for 2 full packs in idle up. After I landed the second pack, it hit me. I had a "Epiphany" (I had to look it up but here is the definition in case you do not know;-) EPIPHANY: 3. a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence or experience. I never thought in a million years I would say this sentence.... "I would totally consider going just electric". Reason why? For one, the smile on my face was so big I am glad no one saw me or it would have won the 'goofy' award of the year. Secondly, the power and consistent power is incredible. Thirdly, it fly's just like the sim and I was doing things that I normally couldn't do and easily! Finally, I am just blown away how well this thing handles like a bigger heli. I am now faced with a huge problem. I need way more batteries and a few more chargers ;-) Stuff I used: 500 gf kit 9650's 770 and 3500g FP 5s 3300 packs Align mains KB tails Stock esc/motor

Skunky... dont really need 6s for my style. The 5s and 15t will be fine. I will give 6s a try later on for fun though....

I just went Scorpion 1900kv on 5s 13T. Found I could use a bit more power even though I'm not doing anything crazy. So I changed to 14T pinion. Anxiously awaiting time to fly it. Hovered in my back yard a bit and MAN was that head screaming! Can't wait to try it on a real flight where I have some space.

Very cool. Report back on the scorpion ... I am curious with that battery and pinion combo what you think of it.

I bumped up to 16t on the stock 500L motor using 5S 3300mAh packs and noticed a huge difference in stability and not much a difference in flight times...
I had my timer set for 7 minutes with the 15t, and my timer set for 6 minutes with 16t... In both cases I was only putting back 55%-60%. My flying style is FFF and lots of orientation practicing though. One day I plan on flying the real thing like I fly in the sim... not sure when that one day will be.

I hear ya mlucia - I dumped my nitro 50 and went all electric last Fall. I love the consistent, linear power and convenience of electric power. I don't burn spots into the runway anymore either.
I switched to the Scorpion 1900 on 14T and I find that it makes my MaxAmps 5S-4000 packs work a lot harder. The pack temps after flights now are much higher. The performance is excellent; however. I'm eyeing the 13T now, but I really don't want to give up the headspeed. I've also lost about 45 seconds of flight time (now 6:30, still should probably go to 6:00 to keep under 80%). Check out the Trex Tuning 5S super test to see a more detailed comparison. |

I didn't know the meaning of that word Mlucia, but lately I've been flying my T500 and Fury on a 10:1 ratio. For every 10 flights on the fury, I do one with the 500.

You are getting 6:30 on the 5s-4000 packs? What are you putting back in after a charge out of curiosity? That's really good time!

When I was running the stock motor, I could get more than 7.5 minutes per pack with ~80% used. |

I also notice it is hard to find a 5S 3300 pack other then Flight Power. I know you get what you pay for but I would like to try a inexpensive pack like the Zippy to compare.
I have not compared the physical size or weight to the Flight Power pack but would a 5000mAh 5S1P 20-30C Lipoly Pack work or is anyone here using one? Just curious. Oh... also, I have 2 Flight Power 3S 2500 packs sitting around. If I decide to wire them up will I have to change the pinion or what would the results be on 15 T ? thx guys Edit: Never mind, I found the handy dandy calculator on Ready Helis site.

I'm waiting for the Protek R/C 5s 4000mah packs to come back in stock at www.amainhobbies.com. Those packs were $82 each last time I saw them in stock.

I really like my 500 on 6s, but fly 5s if you like it.
For charging, the hyperion duo is hard to beat. You can charge up to two 6s packs at the same time, built in balancers, and you can even balance charge two seperate packs. At 2s you can charge two packs in 1/2 hour.. or 4 per hour.... which is a lot of flying time on electric. you can always buy a a second charger if you want more.

Thats wierd, I'm a sport flyer... running 6s 2600mah batts I get 6 mins... in fact I think I can get 7, I just need to bump up my timer.
95% flat curve... but as I said, sport flying... in fact my main focus now is making everything I do really smooth... probably very easy on the batteries.
