Cool Some HD Aerial Video! First Flight Test

First time testing with this setup, works pretty good! Nice and smooth. For whatever reason the quality and framerate sucks on youtube compared to the raw avi. I think my flying "smoothness" needs to improve also!

Testing T-rex 450 Aerial Video Camera (4 min 17 sec)

The camera is a little Aiptek 720p video camera.

It's pretty small and light and takes decent quality video for what it's worth.

Actually that was one of the cloudier days we've had lately! It was taken 30 mins before sunset Yes christams lights on palm trees take some time getting used to

M52 POWER! that a really good video how did you mount it ? And do you know the weight of the camera? And what is the total flying time with it on are you geting?

Sorry for all the questions thinking of getting a Trex 450 for stills work, and maybe a little video Lifting a Lumix FX-35.

great video! Aiptek makes the A-HD+ 1080p camera thats pretty solid as well as the DXG model. You can upload the HD video to Vimeo and theres the option to enable downloading the full HD file for best playback too. How'd you mount it? I'm still on the sim but have a 450 Rex waiting

That was impressive video. Any chance of a photo of it mounted on the bird? Really nice quality video even after youtube does it's stuff.

Nice work. What video editing software did you use to input the captions?
Thanks
Mark

Sorry I don't know the weight of the camera but it is decently light. I'm sure it could be made much lighter if the plastic casing was removed!

The heli is mounted using some thick density double sided sticky tape I got from work. It has great dampening properties. In addition to that 2 velcro securing straps to make sure it doesn't fall off! I was very pleased with the stability and smooth-ness of the video. I did balance the tail and main rotor spot on too.

I wish you guys could see the original raw video. Youtube framerate is horrible in comparison!

Flight time was a little over 8 minutes compared to regular of 11!

P.S the photos make the camera on the heli look huge in comparison to in person. I close the LCD screen so its smaller and less weight hanging off of the side. Took 1 min to trim it out perfectly for a hover with the CG off center like this too.

That is a pretty nice crisp video for that size of camera. Actually, haven't really heard of that camera make. Man, my heart was starting to pound at that initial height! The second half of the video was easier to watch as your transitions were smoother (not as jerky). I hope my first video comes out that good. Could hear your battery power cut down around the 3:30 mark.

They stopped selling that brand in Canada for whatever reason. I did quite the google search trying to find a retailer that still stocks that brand. Nadda. Hope you have better luck. May just have to buy it State Side.

You can find the Aiptek at BestBuy, Walmarts and Target stores. It's in a little plastic sealed package usually hanging by the memory cards and cheap disposable cameras. Or just get them on-line from www.Aiptek.com. Ive got 2 that are great for stereoscopic video

Ya, I'll have to go to Aiptek.com because Bestbuy.ca and Walmart.ca does not sell them. As for Target, there is talk it's coming to Canada but not as of yet that I have seen. It must be one of those marketing, freetrade bullcrap things. Just like we have stuff you can't buy.

When you close the LCD window, doesn't the camera shut off? My daughter has the same camera and hers shuts down upon closing the window, what am I missing, or doing wrong? Thanks

The velcro attachment on the bottom acts as a spacer preventing it from closing all the way and the camera stays on.

Ahh, pretty tricky..........my daughter just informed me that if you swing the LCD screen 180* from the closed position, it will stay "on" (w/the display facing the outside).

You can also remove the magnet from inside the door so it doesn't shut off when you close it with the screen facing in, or spin the screen around and close it so the screen is facing out and it will still stay on
