I don't know how much of a drive it will be for you but the Northern Illinois guys are an AWESOME group of people. I always try to make it to some of their events (I am south Wisconsin) and have flown with them as a guest on their fields. Great people. You can try to post in their thread and find out more info.

A little closer to you in Champaign is the home of Spectrum. Andy Kunz a radio designer from Spektrum is in a thread on RCG about the DX transmitters. All though he's a plank guy he might know the heli guys in that neck of the woods.

Several of us fly helis in the area. eli field in monticello and Champaign county rc club. Not a ton of heli activity, but some. i live about 3 miles from the champaign field, but fly at both.

Several of us at horizon fly helis.

There are a few of us in Springfield but that is an hour drive from Bloomington. Be sure to stop by Falcon Hobby Supply in Springfield. Best local hobby shop I have found anywhere.
