I have alot experience with both now..
Phantom is more 'tuneable'. If you change props, motors, esc's etc, the phantom can be re-tuned to work properly with different combinations. The GPS and attitude modes in the phantom are a little different than Blade.. But the phantom has more programmable options. Some of the things you can make a phantom (Naza) do that currently can not be done with the 350QX: - GPS+altitude hold without ioc (stick relativity) mode.. - Reset of home position while in flight (not saying this is a good idea) - 2 user settable failsafe options: RTH or land.. ie. you can set it to land on failsafe, even if you have GPS lock.. - Basic and attitude gain tuning. So if you want less aggressive (and sometimes even smoother flights) you can back gains down.. - Different options of how to stop motors.. - Altitude hold at any random altitude, not relative to the stick, (ie, center stick=hold current altitude). However, many of the options and variations above are confusing at first. While blade has less 'variations', what Blades does do, it does very very well.. - No tuning of pids or gains. nothing to be confused by. Out of the box works really well. - The blade is way more agile, faster, more powerful feeling than the Phantom in all modes. Naza GPS mode severely limits the max tilt angle.. Naza attitude mode allows more tilt angle, but still not to the level the 350QX will go.. In Naza Manual mode vs. 350QX agility mode.. Again 350QX agility mode feels much better. You can do a full throttle punch out with less odd tendencies than the Naza.. - Motor stopping is way way easier to understand and 'safer' on the 350qx than the Naza.. On the naza ship, I have to program in a mix for my TX to be just over 10%, otherwise there is a risk of motor shut down when in attitude mode and going full down stick.. 350QX is dead simple.. Motors only stop if you go negative throttle, which requires an additional user action.. -RTH landing on 350qx is much much faster. The Naza takes forever to descend and land. The 350QX descends quickly, and somehow manages a type of flare at the last moment before touch down.. really cool.. -Takeoff's on the 350qx are way smoother than the phantom. Most phantom take offs are more like 'popping up' into the air, sometimes with a bit of tilt involved that you have to catch.. Every single take off with my 350qx is a hands off the right stick affair and it just floats smoothly up. (you could take off to an altitude of 1 inch, and it will just hold there).. If you like the current functions and features of the 350qx, then it is a better ship than the phantom. If you want speed, agility and still easy to fly, the 350qx is way better. If some of the Phantom features are on your wish list, then a phantom will be a better choice..

I do not have a phantom but watching friends at the field with them,InFocus sums up the difference quite well..Good job..

changing props, motors, esc's etc to tune it sounds a bit pricey

If you choose the use different props, motors, ESC's the Naza has the ability to be tuned (i.e. various different gain settings) to match the new set of hardware.. Out of the box, the Naza settings for the Phantom are pretty good. Where the 350QX as3x is also really well tuned to match its ESC,motor, prop combo. But if you change this hardware combo, it may seem fine, but is reasonable to believe in some circumstances the ship would fly better with some parameters tweaked.

We hear whispers about the QX soon will have some higher function tune-ability..way points and gain would be top on my list...
Altitude lock in stable mode would be nice as well.

This is a great thread to understand the functional differences between the various models, thanks to the OP for starting it
Quote:
There's a poster on RCG, Kushlik who works for the company that wrote the 350QX firmware, he posted this "The initial idea is to provide stock firmware upgrades to improve functionality, fix bugs and add user interface for PC. New control modes may be added based on the customers' feedback. Unfortunately I do not think that we will be providing any means for the user to upload something that has not been produced/tested/approved by HH and related parties. Alex" How this is implemented is yet to be seen I'm hoping for a nice GUI that allows various options to be preconfigured be the user and then selected in flight with switches and that some new features are included in the first firmware upgrade Altitude hold in Stab and Agil modes would be top on my list. Followed by GPS strength indication I've read (but not seen) that the UMX planes with adjustable options have a basic software tool, a 3rd party GUI has been written that is more user friendly, of course it can still only activate function written in the model's firmware Kushlik asked for a thread containing a wish list was set up, to be considered for later inclusion http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2007990 |
