I don't believe that it is painted.

It is "Metalized" or "plated"-I have seen this before.

The process of metalizing plastic has been used for decades on various things, including full-sized car parts, plastic models, etc.

The oil from one's hands is enough to take it off over time. Exposure to glow fuel makes it even worse.

The first time I encountered this, it was on a Testors RTF plastic P-38 in the late 1960's. The plating bubbled, then came off due to exposure to glow fuel. I have one now that has never been flown, with some plating damage, just because I handled it, all those years ago.

If the plating on the TX has lasted several years, that is actually pretty impressive.

For what it is worth, the plating on my JR 12X is showing signs of bubbling (usually what happens shortly before the plating starts to come off). At least part of the case on the 12X is metal.
