Electrostratus 700 project update
This project has been a long time coming. Getting ever so closer and have made a lot of progress in the last couple of weeks. The current configuration is as follows...
MA Tempest 3D metal head converted to the one piece 3D dampers. Stratus tail with the FAI control unit Frame, particularly up front, has been slightly adjusted to be more electric like 100th gear Custom motor mount 4035-500 Kontronik Jive 80HV Brushless servos 520 Gyro Futaba HS receiver 710mm mains, 105mm tails Rotor diameter is around 63.5" Still some work to do. For some reason my kit was missing some stuff. I had to buy the tail thrust and radial bearings, and now seems to be missing some of the control rods and control rod ends. This kit was packed before the move to Billings so not sure what happened. Can't really complain too much as I did buy the kit well over a year ago. I also need to spread those rear body posts out to accomidate the 100th gear. Weight with canopy and electronics is measuring around 7.4lb less batteries at the moment but I will do a final measure at the end. More to come, and will take better pictures toward the end. I thought I would start a new thread since the old thread is history. Hey I need something to replace my Furion 450 thread! I'm am honestly happier and happier with the model as I get closer to completion.

Build looking sweet man....My spectra conversion has been coming along great as well...got my packs this week and should have her in the air in a couple weeks. It was as if these were made to be electric!

Thanks! I hope to work on it some more this weekend. I got the servo wheels and other misc stuff in today!
...but not before I drop a 4035-630 in the Razor....bwahhahhahahahahhhh..... Be sure to make a video of your maiden take off!!!!

Got the servos installed, but not the servo wheels just yet, well sort of. The frame at the elevator had the wrong pem nuts on the back side of the servo, one size up. I have put some black allen bolts there for now but I need to come up with the final solution. Also mounted the gyro and receiver. Pulled (read heat and beat) the 12th pinion out of the counter block and am ready to green in the 10th pinion. I won't bore with typical build pics, only the stuff that might look a little different than a typical Stratus. The bolts holding the motor up will not be the final setup but rather just holding it in place. I will take another pic once finally installed but it all fits up well with the 100th gear. The orange seal bearings for the motor should be here tomorrow....
Weight so far is around 7.0 to 7.2 lb without canopy, probably around 7.4 to 7.6 lb with canopy. Stratus owners, can you pick out the changes from the base Stratus?

This might seem like a dumb question but why an electric Stratus? What made you choose this project?

1. I like the simpler single stage gearing than that of the Ion X2. Gear changes will be cheaper, the drivetrain efficient. I think the Furion 6 shows where MA is headed and for similar reasons why I also prefer it. 2. The Stratus has a long history with FAI. They even have frames to slip the Stratus into an F3C body shell. I have a set of 3D blades, paddles, and dampers, and also a F3C set. The Stratus can do both styles of flying very well with these simple changes. Also, the metal Tempest head, is a much needed item to swing the heavier F3C blades at near 2200rpm. 3. It will be lighter than the Ion X2 for 3D, and I can add weight were I want to if needed when fying FAI. 4. It cures one of the very few weaknesses of the Stratus on nitro, the fan collets and vibrations. That was a negative among many that flew the Stratus in FAI or even 3D, and the electric conversion should bring out even more potential than an already great flying model on nitro. But like I said, even those reasons are really just what fits me personally. Yep!

Also i see they did a little bit of a frame change since mine. The one frame half where the throttle servo went, was open on both sides. This newer version is closed in on one side. This was a weak spot in the frames. And a plate bolted over the opening on the other side would help also. That what led to the re kitting of mine. The frames were cracked there wich i think caused a shake. Wich on it's last test hover to see if i fixed it, it shook so bad the reciever battery came un plugged..You can guess what happened next.
It was only 3 feet off the ground but the aftermath looked like it went in from several hundred feet.. Also i have quite a few 2.5 PEM nuts. Send me a address and i'll send them your way man. chuck P.S. Looking sweet so far. When i get everything settled down i'm going to get a buddy of mine to help me with some "Special frames" to mount a 111T main gear in. Possibly a inverted motor as well.. |

Had a little set back on the motor, and found out why it felt "sticky". I pulled it apart and found soft epoxy runs and bulbs all over, and they were causing the sticky. Seems the worker that made it did not either cure or mix it properly. Lucien at Innov8tive was a true professional every step of the way and replaced the motor with a new one that is very nice and spinning freely, so I have to give him props for being a stand up guy.
I powered up all the servos and gyro, set the gyro to 760 pulse for the BLS251 and wiggled them around. Everything seems to be exactly in the right directions with no servo reversing. Also threw in some starting throttle curves and swash afr settings. Servo arms on the way and a blade holder. I got the new pinion attached to the adapter and to the counter bearing block with green loctite and am ready to put a flat on the shaft and mount the motor assembly all up. I also attached the sink to the Kontronik controller via a 50/50 mix of arctic silver 5 thermal and epoxy. I may have some fun things to show in the next couple of days. Just taking my time, in no rush, but hope to maiden flight Christmas break.

I have been thinking about this myself. Lately, I have been surprised at some of the industrial applications for CA but I have yet to locate any thermal conductivity data.

Actually, I can’t take credit for the idea, MrMel was kind enough to share this tip with me, but in my opinion it has a lot of merit I think, and MrMel has a lot of experience with Kontronik controls to support it.
In looking at the material properties, Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound is 99.9% pure silver, which has a Thermal Conductivity value of around 419 W/m-K, the thermal adhesive (62-65% silver by weight) as sold by Ready Heli has a TC of =>7.5 W/m-K. Epoxy adhesive has a big range but let’s assume a low of .14 W/m-K, and CyanoAcrylate .10 to 1.65 W/m-K. As a side note, I believe some thermal epoxies are actually used in aerospace as a thermal insulator. The Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound is good, but mixing in a little epoxy hardens it enough to use in our application. I’m sure doing this lowers TC, but would still be much more effective than CA imho. Even more, it supposedly gets even better after 200 cycles of thermal break in. I don’t have any comparative measurements, but my 60HV controller runs really cool on my Razor 600. My guess the instructions say to use CA because it is relatively cheap, easy, effective, and most enthusiasts will have it already. Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound is about $10 for a small tube, and most people won’t have it in their tool box. It's a well rounded decision on their part, but doesn't mean it is absolute. If you could somehow get perfect metal to metal contact 6061 T6 has a TC of 167 W/m-K, but no real way to do that as any adhesive will have some thickness, and air is a great insulator at around .03 W/m-K, depending on humidity. In reality even the thermal adhesive Ready Heli sells should be better than CA or standard epoxy. This is all just overcompensating wackiness on my part, but hey I enjoy it. http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...l_adhesive.htm http://designworld.matweb.com/search...1443d33&ckck=1 http://www.readyheli.com/C2019-Arcti...e_p_32218.html http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2216879

There is a way to get perfect aluminum/copper connection but AFAIK only one company in the world has mastered it. I'm a huge nerd so I actually get an electronics cooling industry technical magazine. AS5 is some pretty good stuff but I would be happy to see them simply include an adhesive thermal pad with their heatsinks rather than encourage the use of CA.

Subscribed. I haven't flown my Estratus for a while, and I'm not sure what to do with it. Flybarless on a BW frame wasn't the best idea so far.

Great to hear from you Laurens! Sorry to hear about your ratios. The nice thing about your Bobby Watt's arms is that they are bolt on CF. If you designed up some new ones you could have some cut out with a better ratio for FBL possibly? I'm not as familiar with that conversion. When I get my Stratus all finished up, maybe we can do something about that.

I think the BW conversion arm ratios are not optimal for FBL when combined with his FBL head unit and the heli is not behaving like he would want it to. Surely we can all put our heads together and come up with a plan. I use Pro E every day, I've done a whole articulated head and plotted ratio graphs before. But I had better get this Stratus done first at it has been a project long enough, time to fly.
How about you Steve, how is yours doing?
