CB100 MOD

Hi guys, I finally finished the CB100 mod.
I will post enough information hopefully, that anyone wanting to do this or any part of the mod, will be able to do it.
If you have further questions, I would be glad to answer them.
My mod includes:
- Replacing original motor with HP05
- Replacing original tail motor with 2.9g
- Replacing tail boom and tail fin with solid CF boom and CF fin
- Replacing skids with MIA Superskids
- Slight canopy modification to fit new skids
- Moving tail ESC between servos
- Design and make custom tail stuts and stabilizer
On this mod I run tail wires along the tail boom in 1/16" heat shrink tubing and attach it to the boom with pieces of 3/16" heat shrink (I do not heat the heat shrink in case I need to remove things.


First things to be removed from the heli are tail motor, boom, swash guide. We then remove skids, battery cage, main gear, main motor and complete head with swash rotor blades etc.
I use solid CF rod same thickness as original CF tube, cut to length (found at LHS)
The tail motor, main motor, tail motor holder were all bought from CJ.
The skids like I mentioned are from MIA
The tail struts are made from 1mm CF rod cut to length and inserted in linkage eyelets, secured with a drop of CA.
The tail stabilizer is made from a broken tail rotor and the tail stabilizer holder is cut out of ABS pipe


For the stabilizer holder before you cut it out, you must drill a hole same diameter as the boom, then cut the top portion, so the boom can "click" in the holder.
The holes for the skids screws have to be enlarged, and the "eyelets" for the struts that attach to the frame must be installed before the skids.
(I also had to replace the plug that came with the original main motor, to one that fit the Walkera ESC socket.


Final touch, as mentioned is a slight trim of the canopy for the new skids. This mod of the CB100, practically makes the heli indestructible!
I also made a quick video of the modded CB in flight. (still trying to get used to the power difference between motors)

The majority of us, sooner or later decide to change the Walkera plugs to micro-deans (or other connectors).
I try to do this as safe as possible (to not short out the battery) and this is the method I like best:
Using a pin (or very small flat screwdriver) I push on the small metal tab and pull the wire from the plastic socket.


I then ream the socket with the pin and slip it over the micro dean (I solder positive or red wire to female side of micro-dean) I then solder the positive wire and heat shrink it.
(do not forget to slip the heat-shrink on to the wire before attaching the micro-dean)


I then repeat with the negative side and... voila!!


( I use a small piece of thin cardboard over the pinchers, so the wire insulation does not get damaged or shorted)

Hmmm
Looks a lot simpler than the way I did it John, I cut the ends off (one at a time) and stripped/tinned the ends before soldering them back to the Micro Deans. Your way looks much easier, I will do this next time.

BTW, that HP05 main motor upgrade sounds like it about to strip the gears.

Awsome, Im going to go buy the upgrade, I have considered it for weeks. Did you have to change the ESC as well ??

Thanks R, you don't have to change the ESC (I think it's an L2 on all CB100's) but the the motor connector has to be changed to fit the Walkera ESC (if you're buying from CJ, you can email him before and have him send you a connector along with the motor), or you could solder the wires directly to the ESC. (check for spin direction before you solder)

The upgrades arrived and the harder xtrem blades adds more /faster respons and my CB100 seems more alive with these blades.It also have the Xtrem skid and Jetski horisontal fin.
Still waiting for batteries and crash parts ordered from chinesejade.com...
Does anybody have any issues with that shop?
Anyway, i realy love flying my CB here in a small space and it will be interesting to fly it in the airport hangar in a couple of days

Are there any stock horizontal stabs and connectors that fit the boom from other helis of similar size? I need to stabilize delicate boom attachments and have wanted to add the struts but lack your talent for manufacturing stuff out of ABS.

I upgraded one of my CB100s tail fins and motors to2.9g using the WowHobbies upgrade, and expect to add their main motor upgrade next. I would like to have the struts to help support the boom with the extra torque.

The CB 100 has some real problems in cold temperature like we have in Norway now!
-4C on the indoor gathering on friday and the heli was all over most of the time...flying nice for a while then like it had rabies!!

I have the motor upgrades on both ends and have not noted a need for extra stability out of the boom although boom supports could prevent wear 'n tear on the frame where the boom is inserted.

I'm using the WOW available 650 mAH / 20C bats instead of the 500's so they're a little heavier and I've chosen not to add weight in other areas. I think this hel could use some help in the "aesthetics" dept though and I'm guessing that many mods are done for purely aesthetic reasons on the CB.

Hey Mikey, I must agree with you, that I started doing the skids and boom strut mods for aesthetic reasons initially, on my 4#3b. However I noticed that they improve survivability, by a great margin. I have done so many tail plants from ceiling height with my 4#3b that I actually broke the CF tail fin and nothing happened to the boom. The skids are also indestructible, since I installed those I haven't broken them and minimized broken canopies.

Hey, where did you get the CF rod to make the tail boom out of? I as my LHS and they don't have any. I've already cracked it within my first flight and it wasn't even a hard hit.

Another thing, I was thinking of making a tail fin out of some lexan for crash resistance.

Anyone know of a place where they sell better tail fins?

I measured the boom to be around 2.5mm instead of the 2.9 of that one. Did you have to sand yours down at all to make it fit?

Thanks John for your info, I will order the bits. I also have a S107 mini helicopter and the tail boom is 2.9 ml and it has struts that may well fit. The CB100 boom is longer but the struts will give support. I have an old one that has expired and I will try the mod

Welp, I just installed the 2.9g motor and she runs! The hardest part was figuring out where to put the extra extra extra long tail motor wires. I thought about cutting them, but I wasn't sure how to strip it when it came time to solder. After about 20min of flight time, I noticed the motor "twitches" a bit. Anyone know what might be cause?
